I'm in marching band (Scotch Plains Fanwood Raider Marching Band, Group 5 Open in USSBA) and I really enjoy it. I also plan on being in the band for the next 4 years. But does 4 years of marching band show dedication or something if you put it on your ECs list?

Hey, I am about 30 minutes from Scotch Plains (My dad works right in Westfield) and I am a marching band as well... Ridge High School... I'm the president of both the wind ensemble and the marching band at my school... I would say stick with it. Truthfully in 9th grade I wasn't really too excited about marching band but I grew to love it.
I would say that many colleges like to see marching band because marching band is based on military stuff and it shows that by staying in for four years that you can display qualities that people in the military have and thats good :)

If you all liked MB in high school, definitely think about doing it in college. It's an awesome way to meet people and gameday is worth all the work. I never did marching band before coming to Boston College and what a rush it was the first time I performed - it was in front of 50,000 people at our Penn State game that was nationally televised. Not quite a high school experience! But seriously my band friends are my new family at college, making the whole deal totally worthwhile.

I think marching band looks great on applications, especially with the amount of time committment it involves. I was in my marching band's color guard for 4 years (Piscataway, USSBA Group 6 Open) and my interviewer seemed really impressed when I told him all about it. Have fun!
