I’m an incoming freshman at UMD and I was really interested in joining the marching band after having done it all four years at my high school. I didn’t know that the marching band was a credited thing; however, I have a class that I have to take as part of my Scholars program which would interfere with only Monday practices/classes. Should I just not even consider joining the marching band?
I am also an incoming freshman and in the scholars program at UMD as well! I have similar conflict with marching band and my scholars colloquium on Wednesdays, but when I talked to my advisor she said that this was a somewhat common scenario, and that professors are usually pretty flexible about accommodating for that kind of thing, since you can’t really reschedule marching band practice or scholars colloquiums. Hope that helps your decision!
Thanks so much, this did help a lot! So should I just email my advisor? (I already attended orientation so I guess I missed my chance to ask in person).
Email the program director of your individual scholars program since they are likely the ones teaching the scholars colloquium. I have always found Maryland to be very accommodating to students wanting to participate in multiple programs.
Just as a follow up, I have a question for anyone with general knowledge of the marching band: what are the costs like for joining? I just got information about fees and stuff but they don’t say how much it is.
