I was wondering what prerequisites would help to be selected as a Marine 2nd Lt. as opposed to a Navy Ensign, and if MCJROTC can be a prerequisite.

Once you get here, it doesn't matter what great accomplishments you achieved before I-Day. Yeah, they're still great things that you've done, but service selection is based solely on your performance during your four years here.

So Dmeix - does USMC appeal to you there at USNA? I know my kiddo has started hanging out with the semper fi club people ....I think that's the name of the group.....since she definitely wants to go Marine.

Marine4life DMeix is correct that your service selection choices start with your final Order of Merit ranking at the beginning of senior year. The top of the heap will get their first choices - be it aviation, sub, SEAL, Marine, etc.

I have my heart set on SEAL. Given the difficulty of getting selected for SpecWar, though, I'm torn as far as back-ups go.

I don't know if I would go SWO and apply for a lat transfer to NSW after earning the pin, or getting right into the action and going Marine ground with the hope of getting selected for Recon on down the line. I just don't know if I can brainwash myself to the point of communicating through grunts, yuts, and oorahs. I've thought about it a lot, and go back and forth, but everytime I meet an upperclass who wants to go MC, it reminds me of why I want to go to blue side.

I've got some time to figure it out, though.

Oh, it's the Semper-Fi Society...apparently they're too good for the 'club' category.

How about Ranger School? Is that open to mids?

Whistle Pig....Ranger is ARMY stuff - anyone here know if any mid going USArmy/Ranger?? I'd be very curious myself.

By the way, Rangers BEAT everyone else in early Afghan action - even our best Marines so I'm really not dissing them. In fact, have a few close friends who were part of that early Ranger action and their motto: Rangers lead the way definitely applies to them

Midshipman can be selected to go to Ranger School as part of their summer leave/training but can't 'go Ranger' unless they go with an interservice transfer at commissioning. My son's roommate went to jump school last summer and earned his jump wings.

PS Recently a Midshipman who did attend Ranger School over the summer graduated 1st in his class! Go Navy

^^Said Mid is going SEAL.

I saw him at a football game actually...he gets to wear the Ranger ribbon on his shoulder like any other Ranger.

To do Ranger School, you pretty much have to give up all your summer leave...I'm all for it though.

During which summer would they go to Ranger school?

And as to what Peskemom mentioned, from what I understand you can't get into Rangers from the USMA, you have to go Infantry, then get selected for Rangers, then go through the school and qualify to get put into a Ranger Battalion, as you can go through the school, get your qualification, and go back to your Infantry unit. Atleast this is what I've known of, and from what I've been able to find. (I could be totaly wrong, but Rangers/SF isn't offered on the USMA's website for career selection after graduation)

Makes it more...appealing to go USNA>SEAL than USMA>Infantry>Rangers>SF. Atleast in my mind.

Summer before firstie year. By then, most mids have completed their summer training reqs and are free to select more career-oriented training. ie, SEAL TAD, aviation cruise, SUBTRAMID, Leatherneck, Ranger school (though I've only heard of 1 ever doing this), as well as various exchange cruises with foreign navies, etc...there's a boatload of options, and if you're in good-standing, you can get some kick-a$$ training in over the summer.

S's doing IFS this summer and that's it!
