Marist College vs. Fairfield University

Hi!!
I was accepted into both Marist and Fairfield and am having a difficult time making a decision. I am not exactly sure at this point what I would like to major in but as of right now I am thinking Accounting or Biology. Both schools are about the same distance from home and I received decent scholarships from each. Any input/advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Have you visited them? If not, do so. If you did, what did you like/dislike about each?

Accounting and Bio are very different. What are your career goals??

What are your parents saying about paying for the net costs after scholarships?

We looked at both with my S. Iā€™d go with your gut feeling.

I have visited both and was actually just at Marist today. I think my biggest obstacle is actually choosing what kind of career id like!!

Rather than ā€˜decent scholarship from eaxhā€™, can you list your parents ā€™ budge and your net cost at each?
Net cost = (tuition, feed, room, board) - (scholarships, grants) = ?

@MYOS1634 Given what the OP said, I think we should assume both schools are affordable. Many people donā€™t like to give that detailed personal financial information here.

@lauraelizbeth That is something you should not ask people who never met you to figure out for you. Spend some time looking at the curriculum of both paths, thinking about what you want to do etc.

Why accounting? Why biology?
Thereā€™s not much of a 'careerā€™with biology though so what do you hope to do?
Did you get into honors at either one?
One is preppier than the other (Fairfield) does that appeal to you or bother you?
Marist has no theology/religion requirement , does that appeal to you or bother you?

Have you visited? DD and I went to a Marist information session, tour, and met with an art professor. We LOVED Marist. The students are enthusiastic and look happy. Details are sketchy but hereā€™s what I remember. The school has a tight relationship with ??IBM?? which they talked about a lot as the reason their technology was quite up to date everywhere. There is a definite religious flavor to it without being overwhelming. The guide said that they have a ??priest? brother? who lives on campus that is extremely popular with students. The Sunday ?mass? is one of the most popular events on campus because this man is amazing. The community service piece of the school is not mandatory but highly encouraged. Housing lotteries have level of student involvement as a ā€œbonusā€ point. Thus, you can move up in the lottery by being involved on campus. DD fell in LOVE with the program in Florence, which is available for the first year. We drove through Fairfield. It did not get a fair shake, so someone else should comment on it, but DD was not super impressed. I donā€™t think you can make this decision based on paper.

oops sorry - just saw that you had visited. Time for a serious timeout for pros and cons list! Have you reviewed the class list for both majors?

My friend is having a tough time making the same decision. She likes how Marist is bigger and more diverse, but she likes how Fairfield has more of a town surrounding it (also the beach is a plus). I think you should make a list of pros and cons and then decide what you can live with and what you can live without. Iā€™m not sure about the quality of each of their accounting or biology programs compared to each other, but you should also consider that.

Hi! As a current Marist student, I would love to give you some input about what made me choose Marist, hopefully this can help make your decision a bit easier! Marist is actually the only college that I applied to. It was the first campus that I had ever visited, and as corny as it may sound, it was love at first sight! No other campuses lived up to the expectations Marist set for me early on. I applied Early Decision and got in and this was the best decision of my life hands down! I knew that I wanted to major in Fashion Design coming into college, but so many students are like you and might be a bit unsure of which direction theyā€™d like to head in. We have advisors and programs set up at Marist to help ease you into your classes and make it more clear for you to make a decision regarding a major. You donā€™t have to choose a major coming into Marist if you donā€™t want to, in fact so many students come in undecided! Marist definitely makes it much less stressful and overwhelming and helps guide students down the right path instead of forcing them to choose a major that may not be the right fit for them! Outside of the classroom there is so much to do, between clubs, athletics, lunch down by the river, frisbee on ā€œMarist Beach,ā€ Starbucks dates with your friends out on the Hancock patio, musical performances, and so much more! I am involved heavily in all of my extra curricular activities, and there is definitely something for everyone. I can assure youā€™ll have no trouble finding your niche here in our Red Fox community! You will definitely never be bored at Marist. Good luck with your decision, and congratulations on your acceptances!

Am I too hung up on the Forbes and US News Rankings? Does anyone else use the rankings as an indicator of how good the school is? I was accepted into Honors Program and doing more research before making a decisionā€¦
