<p>Mark Maybury '86 has been tapped as the new chief scientist of the U.S. Air Force in Washington, D.C. </p>
<p>From high-speed and hypersonic-weapon development to the latest aircraft, technology and tactics, Maybury will play a crucial role in advising top Air Force personnel. </p>
<p>"The position requires outside-the-box thinking, knowledge and expertise concerning scientific matters, both today and well into the future," said Maj. Cristin Marposon, an Air Force spokesman. </p>
<p>He earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester in 1986, and was named valedictorian. Maybury went on to earn a master's degree of philosophy in computer speech and language processing at Cambridge University in England, and received a master's in business administration from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. </p>
<p>In 1991, he earned a a doctorate of philosophy in artificial intelligence from Cambridge University. </p>
<p>Among his many achievements, Maybury received an award from New York City for support of World Trade Center rescue and recovery efforts after the Sept. 11 attacks, and a Presidential Recognition Award for planning for the terrorism-information sharing environment. He previously worked as the executive director of the Information Technology Division for MITRE Corp. in Bedford.</p>
