I just stumbled upon the Maroon Financial Credit Union last night while figuring out banking at UChicago. Do any of the UChicago alums use this credit union? How about current students?

More importantly, what are some advantages and disadvantages of using this credit union?

I second this question! I bank with a local credit union, and will have almost no choice about switching to either a local Chicago bank or a national one. What is this mysterious little gem of a UChicago bank?

Citibank appears to be the official campus bank, with an on-campus branch and several ATMs. I’m considering using them for that convenience, but I’m pretty inexperienced with banking decisions (have yet to open or need a checking account; that’s likely to change). =(

I don’t think so. They don’t have free checking or many other features set up for students (e.g., people with very low balances), and I am not sure if undergrad affiliation even counts for them. They also have exactly one ATM.

Citi is most convenient, but I have heard awful things about their customer service and general shadyness. As far as national goes, Chase is also easy to find in Hyde Park.

I don’t know too many undergrads on Hyde Park Bank, and they probably don’t have many perks, but I have heard only good things about them, and they are all over the area. Also their headquarters tower on 53rd is beautiful.
