Maryland Honors College vs. Penn State

I was just accepted into UMD's honors college/ business school, and I was accepted into Penn State's business school. Which one should i choose?

I've heard nothing but good things about the honors program. Good way to have a close knit community in a big school. I would choose MD if I were you!

Does the scholars program have the same close knit community as the honors program. that's what I'm most concerned about.

Hey -

Penn State's business school generally has a better rep. But it is also well-known that academics overall at Penn State and Maryland are comparable. I don't think that you would get better job opps or internships coming out of Penn State than you would at Maryland. Since you are not in-state for MD, cost isn't much of a factor. I would choose Penn State probably, since they're v. similar except that business is /said/ to be a bit better at Penn. But other things you'll want to factor in to which school to go to is whether you like a more rural setting (Penn State) or want to be close to DC for concerts/internships (MD), and things like that. Visit both schools and see where you fit in best. They're v. similar academically.

As far as the honors college, I heard the classes are interesting but it is actually /less/ of a living/learning community than scholars. If you were accepted into a special honors program, though, especially Gemstone, that might be another reason to choose UMD.

because umd and penn state are comparable academically, i'd say that honors here makes umd a better choice. we also have a MUCH better location, being near DC and baltimore, for internships and stuff which is definitely important when you're a business major.

I had this choice last year and I picked UMD. I was offered a spot in the sapphire program at PSU, which is some business program with about 70 students(if i remember correctly, its been a year) and the scholars business program at UMD with about 70 students. The schools were extremely comparable.

Are you instate at either school? The truth is I would go for finances and how you feel about each school. I truly don't believe the quality of the education is going to be better at either school.

No, I am from New York, thank you for your input

umd honors program.

i was in the same position as cheapseats. i got into this sapphire program which seemed pretty prestigious, but i chose maryland because penn state is right across from a barn while it takes at max half an hour to get to D.C. from the metro.

but besides location, the maryland business school is amazing. it has a LOT of events and programs for students, and everyone is extremely supportive. and the honors program is a great plus. i really enjoy being in it.

US News and World Reports shows Univ of Maryland and Penn State as tied for 18th place in their ranking of undergrad business programs

Penn State is ranked 47 in top national universities and UMDCP is 54...but see which environment you like best, then choose. You can't really decide until you've been to both.

<a href="http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/brief/t1natudoc_brief.php%5B/url%5D">http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/brief/t1natudoc_brief.php</a></p>

sarpash hit the nail on the haid with "you can't really decide until you've been to both". if you choose a school without visiting based only on rankings, you might really be screwing yourself over. visiting will help you get a better sense of the intangible, non-numeric qualities of a school. and since you'll be there for four (or more) years, those things are what really matter.

definitely MD if you would like to get an internship.. the nearest big cities (over 200,000 people) to penn state are baltimore and pittsburgh, which are 130 miles away while MD is like 10 miles from DC and 30 from baltimore...
just a few facts lol
