Maryland or Salisbury

I received scholarships to Salisbury bringing it down to 11,000 a year. Maryland would be about 19,000 a year. I like the school spirit at Maryland and the facilities. I like the smaller classes, dorms, and location of Salisbury more.

Basically I'm torn and I'm running out of time at this point to make a decision. Reputation and Job future also play a role in my decision and Maryland has a better reputation. I'm told Maryland is a "better" school.

Can anyone offer some insight? Thanks!

I’ve never visited Salisbury, but I think the “party school” reputation without the prestige could hurt you in the job market. Also, the academic level of fellow students will be higher at Maryland. I mean, small classes are great if you can have intelligent discussions, but otherwise it could be really aggravating.

Do you know what you’re majoring in? How much of a financial burden would Maryland be for you and your family?

Also, what do you like about Salisbury’s location? Is there anything to do there but party?

Salisbury has 0 prestige. Go to Maryland.

Ditto the above post.

I don’t think Salisbury is better than Maryland for any program, so your major doesn’t really matter.

If you can afford the extra $8,000, then go to Maryland. If not, I’m sure you can still be successful at Salisbury.

Go to UMD. It is well worth the extra $8,000.

Hi, just wondering which school you attend and how you liked your first year??

For what it’s worth,

By Family decision I went to Salisbury. I did not like it. Partying was a big thing there, which I am not into. If you don’t have a car there really isn’t anything to do. It got old fast. The school is smaller than you would think and you end up seeing the same people a lot like high school.

Although I will say for the most part the teachers were helpful/friendly and the dining hall food was pretty good. Four of the freshman dorms, one of which I stayed in, are quite nice and newly renovated. They are nicer than those at Maryland. However, not many people get to stay in these so you need to get lucky. Most freshman stay in the high rises which are nowhere near as nice.

I am transferring to Maryland this fall as a sophomore. I am very excited! I knew I would not be happy at Salisbury so this was a “no brainer” decision for me.

I will say the majority of the students at Salisbury really do love the school. In the end, it just wasn’t for me.

If you have any questions feel free to ask!

I’ve lived and Salisbury for 17 years and please take my advice: go to UMD.

Umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd umd

Maryland will be worth every penny

Come to Universiyt of maryland!

I have lived in Salisbury for all my life and I recently graduated from a Wicomico Co. high school. In my opinion, Salisbury has been a great area to grow up, but the job opportunities are nonexistent and the shopping/entertainment is subpar. Salisbury is a nice school from what I have seen, but like others have stated, it doesn’t have the nationwide prestige. While attending SU would be an extreme improvement over the other local “university”, UMES, I myself have gladly decided to attend UMD this upcoming fall and I’m excited to start in August.
