I was accepted into the University of Maryland and Georgetown. My major is business and I'm a transfer student. If I attend UMCP I would have a free ride but if I go to Georgetown I will owe 10,000 by the time I graduate. Does it matter which school I go to since I'm going to have to get an MBA.

Thanks

10k is nothing...

others are hitting up to 70k (like me)

go georgetown, DC/gtown is an awesome place to live....not to mention the quality of the school

I forgot to mention that I live in maryland but in the germantown area, so both school will require commute time.

your not living on campus?
they're both about the same ways apart. college park is a subway station away from gtown

No I own my own home and I don't want to sell or rent. My major concern is after I graduate is Georgetown worth $10,000 over UM

whats your intended major?
anything business/international relations id go gtown....if your doing sciences or something techie id go umd

Business. Do you go to georgetown?

no...i just live in the area
they both have a great campus, both in dc
I just like the area in/around gtown a little better...I would pick gtown + 10k over umd. mainly because i know too many people going to umd, and lets just say they're not the sorta quality people i wanna be around for the next 4 years

Well, you say by the time you graduate you will owe 10,000. Will you be paying them over the 4 years? 10,000 is absolutely nothing but if you are going to be paying the 40,000 every year then maybe there is a strong reason for UMD. If this is the banerker(spelling) key scholarship you get free room and board so you could make some money on the side if you rent you house in Germantown and make great money in that area or you could just get the free room and stay at maryland if you feel like it or stay at your house if you feel like it(I am sure that will make another person really happy fi their roommate is only there half the time). If you are paying full tuition and I say go to UMD but G-town is a better school overall and I think a better Business school though USnews ranks them about the same UMD-22 G-town 26. G-town just holds a better name overall. I don't think position in the city should matter much as UMD is only 7 miles away from DC and depending on where you go it may only be a few minutes of a difference. Both are good business schools so price should play a role here and I definately don't think G-town is worth 160,000+ more over 4 years but if it is just 10,000 more go to G-town. It is as good a business school if not better and it is much better overall.

Now interms of money. G-town students, on average, make 4,000 more than UMD students for business where UMD is 46,000. Both are 4-year busienss programs. UMD has a wide variety of students, are you in scholars or honors? ARe you in both business schools already? UMD-Smith student have a much higher SAT than the rest of the freshman students at 1360 on average which is close to G-town's overall average which i think is 1370.

Gtown Gtown Gtown if you only have to pay 10,000.

Since you are a transfer, you will only be there 2 or 3 years. It also sounds like you'll be spending $10,000 more TOTAL, not $10k PER YEAR. But even if it's $10k per year, Georgetown would be a better option. If it's a TOTAL of $10k, it's an even better option in favor of Georgetown. Stand in front of a mirror and say "I went to Georgetown" and "I went to Maryland." Notice the difference in how you feel? Isn't it worth the $10k to be saying "Georgetown" the rest of your life?

If the difference is 10.000 dollars I would go for Georgetown hands down.

I'm a transfer student and should finish in about 2.5 years. My total cost should be 10,000. Thanks.

georgetown... 10k wouldn't be bad with ur starting salary from georgetown...

I was accepted in to the Smith at Shady Grove and Georgetown. I still have to take a few class to be consider for Smith at Shady Grove. I'm a honors student and I'm very involved at my current school. I'm going to figure my final costs. The UM scholarship only covers tuition and fees, so I would still have to pay for housing.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your advice. I'm going to run the numbers again but I'm thinking Georgetown

Have you taken classes at smith at shady grove?? That is about 5 minutes from my house and I was thinking about going there over the summer. Now, smith at shady grove isn't the same as smith at college park--i don't think, and really $10,000 more is absolutely nothing in the long run. G-town will just sound so much better so I think G-town is the clear choice. Good luck.

Cut throught the clutter. Thoroughly investigate the quality and record of the placement office at U of Maryland, and then compute the financial numbers again. For a person with significant assets such as you (and the difference between the UM and GT negligible (I don't know for certain), pocketing the $$ may be a better choice.
