Maryland size

I know Maryland is a pretty big school but i want to know if it feels like you are there with a crapload of people on campus or if it feels smaller. Most of the schools im applying to have 5000-15000 students and i wanted to know if MD would overwhelm me. I visited OSU and i felt overwhelmed there so I want to know if MD will be any different.

I can say that if you are in honors at least, you feel like you are getting really individualized attention. Honors seminars are capped, and you will have a built-in smaller community of other honors students. If you are not in arts and sci, your school will be relatively small, too - kind of a university within a university. Not to mention, joining clubs and getting involved on campus will shrink the ginormousness down, as well. For the record, I feel like so far Maryland has done an amazing job of making me really feel like a person, not a number. Only two of my seven classes are honors, but only one has an enrollment of over 30 people - as a first semester freshman!

That said, there are definitely a ton of people everywhere on campus during peak hours. The highrises house something like 600+ people...yeah, crazy...But really, that's just on the outside. Look at it as exciting, not overwhelming; Maryland makes it really easy for freshman to find their niche quickly. I don't think I'm going to feel like UMD is too large this Fall at all...you grow out of a tiny school, but into a big one :).

But that's just my pimp for big schools, which I like and you may not. I think UMD, at first glance, will seem pretty similar to OSU in terms of size and activity.
