Tiny high school to huge campus??

I’m super interested in UMD, and I’ve visited twice and loved it, plus they have my major and the program looks great (public health science). However, I come from a small high school (66 kids in my grade) and I am worried the size of the classes and school in general will overwhelm me. I think I have a good chance of getting Scholars or maybe Honors College, so if anyone can speak from experience or what they’ve heard- does that make the school any “smaller” for you?
Also, w/ my major, does anyone know what class sizes or like? Some major required classes include stat, intro to chemistry, biology…

Trust me, you will adjust. Maryland has a lot of programs to make the school feel smaller. You may initially be overwhelmed because it is so different, but honestly, that will happen at any college you attend. So, don’t let that dissuade you. Getting involved in clubs or the programs you mentioned are the best ways to make the school “smaller.”

Class sizes run the gamut. Electives can be as small as 20 students, mid-range classes at around 40/50-70 or they can be large lectures. However, classes like freshman English will be small so you can get more attention/feedback. Typically, large lecture classes include huge lectures 2 days a week with one small discussion group session once a week. Since some intro classes are required by several majors, that’s why you could be in a lecture hall with a couple hundred people, but the discussion sections will still give you the small class size of anywhere from 20-35ish so you have the opportunity to ask more personal questions, etc. As you move further into your major, class sizes absolutely do get smaller.

@maryversity thanks so much, this made me feel a lot better
