you mean do teachers send in bad reports? A student can only guess how much a teacher really likes them.... that's why a student has to pick reliable teachers/coaches/etc...... people that know them very well and will write something wonderful, but not hackneyed, about them. I'm sure they get bad recs.

Sure, but the student clearly isn't going to know that their rec was awful, so they can't really rate it.

I guess that's why I was wondering, because except for Sara I haven't seen anyone who actually said they had bad recs.

freakish it is so good to see you too ~ i did read the story. it was odd. i enjoyed it. very odd.

yeah, i don't see the point of rating recs either

I don't think a teacher would write a bad rec. That'd be evil; If I was a teacher and I thought someone was bad, I would just say " I'm sorry- I have too many recs to write. Please get another teacher to do it"

Apparently adcoms say they see a surprisingly large number of bad recommendations.

really? I, also would think that they'd just say that they were too busy. That way the student could approach another teacher who might just think more highly of him. How did you find that out that the adcoms say that?

I suppose particularly malicious teachers try to get back at students they don't like. Most teachers definitely wouldn't, but they're out there.

are you sure they meant bad as in negative, and not just badly written?

I know a teacher who wrote a bad (as in negative) rec about a student who thought the teacher thought highly of him. he's told stories

I heard a random statistic from an adcom that 25% of applicants get rejected based on teacher recs. :( I don't know if that means that they were BAD or BADLY-WRITTEN...maybe they just didn't rave enough? It's making me nervous...

I doubt my teachers wrote bad recs...my counselor might have though; I have no idea what she thinks of me.

I'd think that any decent teacher would at least insist on NOT writing a recommendation rather than writing a bad one, unless the kid was just a gigantic jerk...

Newt, I love your idea, however, it is a little complicated getting the formatting and bullets in. While it is possible to learn, it may discourage many from posting in what can be a frustrating time. Perhaps changing the formatting to a more simple setting (with all of your info still in) would allow for more posts.

Lets finalize a plan ASAP:
Newts stats (formatting???) on one thread
One main feelings thread
Three smaller threads for the three possible outcomes.

How does this look.

For the many people that will be applying elsewhere, and for the future, we can spread our idea to the forums for other schools.

Just out of curiosity...did anyone else copy and paste newt's format and plug in their own info and put "ACCEPTED" at the top, just to see how it looked? :o

How oh so very complicated. I vote everyone fill out a prstats for their homepage now. Or the formatted stuff can go in a separate thread now, created just for that purpose, and when results come out, we can just refer to that. That way we can let the euphoria/depression sink in w/o typing up a bunch of stuff that day.

It's definitely a good idea to fill it out beforehand. Can't imagine anyone wanting to do it right after the results are out- no matter what they are.

Compiling some of the ideas from Newt, Lindseylujh, and myself, here is a proposal to keep D-day organized (unlike Columbia's post that had to be the guinea pigs), so that rejections and deferrals can have a feeling of community:

6 Threads:
One for results name--- EA Results
One for overall discussion--- EA Discussion
Three for outcomes--- EA Acceptance, EA Deferral, EA Rejection
One for technical/mail problems--- EA Technical/Mail Problems

Posting Results in EA Results Thread (Only results and comments on results. Discussion of other issues can take place in other threads to leave this thread readable):

(Short Answer)---

ACCEPTED
1000/500/500/500, 2.0 U.W.
(extra comments)

(Long (preferred) awnser, can be mostly filled out beforehand and saved)
