Inquiring minds want to know what one wears to a master class. Regular casual clothes (jeans, nice shirt) or something dressier? The audition is the following day.

For the master classes given at my son’s voice teacher’s studio, the students are requested to wear shirts with collars and non-jean slacks. I’d suggest that as a safe choice.

Now that would depend on what the master class is intended to teach. If you came in jeans and a nice shirt to a Suzuki or Movement Master Class, you’d be at a disadvantage. For monologues, it would work as long as you can freely move. But in the end, a rule of thumb is this. If the class is for theatre (not singing) wear studio clothes. Something you can move freely in. Looks don’t matter. Come to work. The world of the musician is different and dressing for that seems to be something that they consider a part of the overall presentation.

Thanks! It’s for MT with an audition the next day. So jeans and a nice shirt for a girl is fine?

Yes. Just make sure you can move. If you are just going to stand and sing, then jeans and a nice shirt are fine. Any chance of movement though, and you’d better make sure you can move. I don’t know you, so don’t take offense, but we’ve seen many young women (and men) who wore clothing that was far too tight to be able to move in. That isn’t helpful to you. Trust me.

I agree with kjgc. And even if it is to “just sing”, master class teachers are looking to stretch kids and, well, teach them to sing/act better… to do this, they may have kids move in ways they would never move when “performing” a song.

She wore jeans and changed into dance attire for the dance class. Worked out fine.
