From another thread (person is from Maryland):

"Just got my letter from the University of Maryland saying that I was awarded the Banneker/Key Scholarship! That's a completely full ride covering tuition, room and board, and a book allowance."

[/quote]

That was me. :)

To add, one does not need to be an instate student to qualify for the Banneker/Key scholarship. Those who are nominated as finalists (300 or so) for the BK,show up to interview, but are not selected are awarded the Presidential scholarship, which is $8000/year, which would cover instate tuition, or room and board--however you like to see it.

Southwestern University, Georgetown, Tx

This LAC, one of the 40 "Colleges That Change Lives" listed by Loren Pope and a consistent "best value" offers the brown scholar award. Only three of these are offered but they offer many other good scholarships. With a lower tuition of $23,630, it is possible for high achieving students with a talent in music, art, theatre or URM to come between $18,000 and $23,000 in scholarships. They are very transparent in how they determine scholarships. Only one scholarship over $6000 will be given but scholarships under that amount can be stacked.

<a href="http://www.southwestern.edu/admission-finaid/adm-scholarships.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.southwestern.edu/admission-finaid/adm-scholarships.html</a></p>

BROWN SCHOLAR AWARD - FULL TUITION, ROOM AND BOARD

To be eligible for the Brown Scholar Award, applicants should meet the minimum qualifications as outlined in the general scholarship program and rank minimally in the top 5% of their high school class (or if high school does not rank have the equivalent of at least a 3.8 grade point average on a 4.0 scale in academic work.) In addition, students should score at least a 1400 on the SAT (critical reading & math) or 32 on the ACT.

The following criteria will be used to evaluate each candidate: quality and rigor of the high school academic record, performance on the SAT or ACT, evidence of leadership, quality of the written essay, personal interview with a member of the admission staff, content of recommendation letters, and involvement in extracurricular activities.

Finalists will be invited to campus to interview and compete for awards March 2-3, 2007 (Friday/Saturday). This award is highly competitive. Typically, over 100 admitted students meet the minimum guidelines for consideration. There are no more than three Brown Scholars in any entering class.
