Master List of Merit Awards

To help juniors and sophmores next year, it's been suggested that we start a continuing thread, similar to the "master list of acceptances" to track merit award offers.

So, if you're willing to share, please list the following information for ALL merit award offers, not just the one your child ultimately accepts:

Name of poster (this is optional if you are worried about maintaining privacy), Name of School, Amount of award, GPA/test scores, Any special reason for the award (i.e., special talent, EC, etc.)

We'll keep it as a running thread and it should help future parents and applicants get a sense of exactly what it takes to get merit money at various schools.

WildChild- Indiana University- $7K per year IU Faculty Award for non-resident students- SAT 2060 (1410)- top 10% probably (unranked school) -no GPA calculated

DD was offered the Centre Fellows Scholarship during her junior year of high school. Many thanks to curmudgeon who alerted me of this wonderful opportunity. His DD is also the recipient of this award. They are guaranteed a minimum of $6,000 per year for four years and will be considered for even more scholarship opportunites. DD's stats: ACT 33, SAT 2100, top 4%, 4.2+ GPA. Here's a link for those who are interested in Centre: http://www.centre.edu

DD, along with a few others from CC, has been invited to the Hays Memorial Scholarship Weekend to compete for Hendrix College's top scholarship. Those interested in Hendrix can follow this link: http://www.hendrix.edu

Update:

DD just went to the mailbox. A letter from Hendrix came ... she has been offered an academic scholarship of $48,000 ($12,000 per year) plus an Odyssey Scholarship of $12,000 ($3,000 per year) for a total award of $60,000. That was wonderful news, but that still leaves quite a bit of $$ for us to come up with. We'll continue to keep our fingers crossed that all goes well at the Hays Memorial Scholarship (full ride) weekend.

D did in fact get Centre fellows at $6K per as a junior, also Furman scholars for $4K per and Wells Second Century for $5K per.

The only adcom delivered scholarship news this season is that D has been invited to Millsaps College to interview for their top merit awards (up to full-ride) and has been awarded their top non-interview scholarship of $10K per year. (This is also splash's situation at Hendrix-the first academic awards are limited till the big dance party weekend. Go splash! ) Reduced to numbers D is 1/141, 4.7W, 4.0 UW, 35 ACT.

D got full instate tuition at Univ of Pittsburgh. She is 2260, 9/332, every AP possible.

beprepn

S got the Hendrix letter today as well. Academic Scholarship for $44,000 ($11,000 per year) and Odyssey Honors Scholarship of $16,000 ($4000 per year). We are planning on completing the FAFSA on time to gain an additional $1k! ANd then there's that infamous Hays thing...

He also received the President's Scholarship from University of Portland for $48k (12K per year)
don't know his class rank but he was a transfer and they didn't give him full credit for his A's from his previous school. SAT 2140 (1430)

Congratulations to all whose children are starting to see those scholarship offers roll in! Texasmom, I think you're right ... we have much in common! :)

This is GREAT --- hope we will see many more merit scholarships before all is said and done. Your kids deserve the best! And, thanks to everyone for being willing to share this information. I'm sure it will help others next year.

quiltguru's D. University of Michigan: non-renewable "Regents Scholarship" $1500. Didn't know if you wanted to hear about this kind or not. GPA 3.97, ACT 35, 35, 35, 36. No SAT. SAT II 800, 790, 730.

This thread renews my belief in Santa. Well done, kids and and parents!

Are you interested in the "small stuff"?
S so far has $6,000/yr from U South Carolina as a NMSF with OOS tuition reduced to instate amount (a little over 6,000 this year).App in for other scholarship consideration there.
Also received $6,000/yr at UMass/Amherst..Commonwealth College Honors Scholarship. No mention of reduction of OOS tuition there.

D got $ 10K at Knox College, $9k at North Central College/IL/, and $14K at Ohio Wesleyan. Her stats are ACT 29, GPA 3,5 and she is in top 15% of her class.

CathyMee:
In merit scholarships, I don't think there really is any 'small stuff' label. Every $ these kids get awarded is hard-earned, and well deserved.
So congratulations to your S on all his merit awards so far, and may there be more to follow.

cathymee, is that $6k plus another $6k OOS waiver or the $6k is the OOS waiver? Either way, congratulations! I spent a LOT of time looking at U of South Carolina Honors for D. Very appealing.

Whitman has a 9k per year scholarship. You don't apply. The admissions office puts the information in with the acceptance to the college.
Occidental has a 17k peryear Presidential scholarship. Again, you don't apply. The scholarship is in with the acceptance.

Christmas came early. Case Western Reserve University is now officially barely affordable as is Hendrix College.

Wonderful daughter number only has been given a $12K academic and $4K Odyssey scholarship to Hendrix (and she's still eligible to compete for up to a full-ride). Combined with Hendrix's already unusually reasonable tuition, room and board of @$28K, and the $1K they'll give for filing out the Fafsa early, the cost is down to $11K. A number at least $4k below my fondest EFC hopes, and almost $20K below my worst EFC fears.

Case Western had further to go as it's sticker runs $41K, but they stepped up to the plate with a $25,700 Trustee's Scholarship putting the cost to me at about my EFC as figured by a friendly bar drunk. $15,300 out of pocket will be tough but it can be done with a few more sacrifices. (Bye-Bye car!!)

Her in-state safety, Texas Tech U Honors College, will cost her @ $10K a year with a $4K automatic stats scholarship. Her first year will be at @ $3k if she stays val. She now has 3 schools she knows she can attend that we can afford.

It is a very happy night in my house. I hope it is in yours, too, friends. I feel that her efforts have been recognized by these colleges. She feels they have ,too. Thank you all for helping me help her find a way to a great college. We could not have done it without you. I will now commence commiting the letters to memory. ;)

Excellent news, Cur! And who knows, maybe there'll be room for some bargaining and tweaking upwards of those scholarship numbers when all is said and done. Your young'un is surely to be courted by many schools which would be lucky to have her.

Curmudegeon,
Congratulations! And don't forget to have her apply for local scholarships, too! S was not even as impressive as your D in terms of GPA, class rank and he was rewarded with several thousand dollars in local scholarships, which really helps for the first year.

Cur. Congratulations and may your days be merry and well, merry.
