bassoonmom - this is confusing, I know, but this thread is last year's awards, and I'm thinking you meant to post on the other thread for 2008, right?

Anyway, congratulations. So where is he heading, do you know yet? Utah looks good! :D

Thumper1 - do you mean in-state tuition was not offered at UNT? That's worth at least $16k a year off the top. UNT is totally affordable for scholarship students, even out-of-state.

Violinmom...DS didn't receive a scholarship at UNT at all. He made the mistake of doing an audition NOT on the UNT campus. As he put it...that was a big mistake. He was accepted on the spot when he auditioned...but his scholarship "audition" was on tape. He should have flown down there. You are correct...when a student at UNT receives a scholarship in excess of $500 a year (I think that is the amount), they also get instate tuition. Even without that, the costs are modest.

UNT classical department may be different. But for vocal jazz, your audition specifically for jazz scholarships is on CD or DVD only, not in person -- at least that is my understanding. (And would make sense, considering that at least one of the audition performances has to be with a live rhythm section)

We have been strongly advised to audition in person, on-campus, for best chances for admission.

UNT's scholarship/tuition waiver policy is if you qualify for ANY competitive scholarship -- talent or academic -- valued at $1000 and up annually, out-of-state students pay in-state tuition rates.

God, I hope my daughter gets in. That is such a sweet deal!

Vic, that is what they say, but my D was also accepted on the spot at her audition, and offered a scholarship before she left the room at UNT. She took a DVD and gave it to them, per the instructions on the website but they had not watched it yet...guess they have some leaway.

IU, "dean's scholarship"(is it merit?academic?) 12,000. The rest of whatever(FAFSA +?) will be known later in May. D is an out-of-state MM student .

In case it matters: I thought that was from the music school but was awarded for leadership. I thought it is also not awarded to first year students.

No, it's a merit scholarship. She has it for all 4 years (she's a soph--for a few more days at least--)and she has to maintain a certain average in music and non-music courses and some other criteria. Probably ensembles and stuff. It is for 3/4 tuition and it increases each year as tuition increases. It was $24K freshman year, $25and a bit this year.

2007- D, horn performance:
CIM, $20,000 per year, merit
Oberlin Conservatory, $14,000 per year, merit-conservatory deans scholarship+ very generous other grant aid
CCM, $2500 Conservatory; $5000 academic merit

Kansas University-$10,000 National Merit; $1500 Music
U Colorado @ Boulder-$1,000 Music
CCPA-$12,000 Music; $2,000 Dorm stipend
Mannes-$15,000 Music
MSM-$8,000 Music
UMiami Frost-$24,000 Academic
Juilliard-$20,000 Music

Ultimately it was Juilliard that gave the largest percentage of total cost.
