Masters in Communication, Journalism, Professional Writing in the US/Canada Fall 2013

Hi All,

I have completed my undergraduate degree in computer engineering and I have a science background academically. I have two years of experience in IT consulting but now I want to make a switch. I've always loved writing and now I'm a freelance writer/ghost writer/blogger and also volunteering with a magazine for non-profit journalism.

I have a couple of writing samples to my name but all of them are not journalistic pieces of writing. I really want to get into journalism school, and specialize in print journalism(magazine,news-editorial, etc) and more specifically write for arts, culture, food, fashion, etc.

Here are some of the schools I'm looking to apply to. Please give me some advice on how I can draft a strong SOP and highlight my best achievements considering the lack of journalism experience I have.

Missouri School of Journalism

Columbia - MS in Journalism

Indiana, Bloomington

NYU - Arthur J Institute

Wisconsin Madison

Michigan State Uni

UT Austin

UNC Chapel Hill

Northwestern, Medill

Uni of Maryland. College Park

Uni of Florida

CUNY

Arizona State University

NorthEastern School of Journalism

Carnegie Mellon - Master of Professional Writing

Uni of Southern California - MA in Professional Writing

Emerson College, Boston, - Ma in Writing and Publishing

NYU - MA in Publishing and Writing

Journalism at the University of British Columbia

I really could not find the acceptance rates statistics for any of the above, especially when it comes to prospective students with lack of journalism experience. I do have some experience, only about a couple of months that too with websites and online media. I'm not working at any news agency or newspaper. I'm on the editorial board at a writing and editing services studio and I also work with an independent content marketing consultant for promoting client presence on the social media. Because I love volunteering, I am also a volunteer writer for a global youth magazine, which is recognized by UNESCO and that is in to non-profit journalism. I write feature articles for them.

It would be great if someone could also provide a classification based on safety schools, medium, and ambitious schools. Suggestions for other schools and programs are also welcome and will be highly appreciated.

Please help.

Thanks a ton!
