Masters in England, What Uni? Will I be accepted?

I'm a US student who will graduate next semester, and I want to do a masters in something related to political science and economics. My majors now are those two subjects. My cumulative GPA is 3.5. My major GPAs are: Political Science 3.9 and Economics 2.8. Do universities in England look into the cumulative GPA which is all classes combined or major GPAs? Also, what are my chances getting in any of these universities: And Which university has more international recognition? Which university will provide me with the best job prospects and at the same time provide with an enriching personal experience?

London School of Economics
Msc International Political Economy

Warwick
MA International Political Economy

University of Birmingham
MA International Relations (International Political Economy)

London Metropolitan University
MA International Relations

I have never visited England, and I don't have family or friends there. I have always wanted to do my masters there. So I want to get in to a good university, but I also want a good enriching environment where I will learn a lot about cultures and meet great people. So when telling me which one to go into, please let me know what to expect as a lifestyle in that campus.

I don’t know anything about political science or about the specific courses you have identified. However, I do know that compared to the others listed above, London Met is much less known, much more lowly ranked and generally much easier to get into for everything (but like I said, I have no knowledge of the specific course). The other 3 are much more on a par with each other. In the US I think you will find only LSE is widely known.

I suggest you look at the websites and if you don’t find the answers you need, email the admissions office. There is not such thing as GPA in the UK so they will no doubt use some kind of conversion (entry will probably be based on a GPA equivalent to a UK 1st or 2.1 degree. But what GPA they decide is equivalent varies from uni to uni I’m afraid).

You say you have never been to England. Do you know that Warwick uni is (unusually for England) as campus university in a field in the middle of nowhere? It’s not even in Warwick. The nearest city is Coventry I think. Birmingham is the second largest city and it’s over 100 miles from London. So if you want a city environment, don’t choose Warwick.

I suggest you also visit www. the student room .com
Remove the spaces for the link to work. It’s a UK-based board similar to this.

Just so you are aware, there is usually very little funding available for foreign students in the UK, and the cost of living can be high.

Good luck with your application.

Thanks Cupcake!

I have a somewhat clear idea of what to expect from each university. I have actually been researching universities in England over a year ago. I just want to confirm my findings with real life people from England or International students who studied in England. I also want to know where would it be nice to live because I want an education and have a year of self development, as well. Of course, the most important is I want to get into a good university, so this is what I know:

LSE: It has the most international recognition and is the leading uni in modern economics and international relations in the world. It will be better to be accepted here. But the cost is higher and it is located in expensive London. Their requirement is a second honours degree 2:1 which they convert to a 3.5 GPA in the US. Therefore, I do meet the requirements, but just barely. I would love to attend this uni, though. I don’t know how competitive it is to get accepted.

Warwick uni: It has good recognition in the UK and has more international recognition from the rest of the universities I mentioned. It is in the middle of nowhere, though. I don’t know if it would serve for a good idea for self-development. They require a second honours degree 2:11 equivalent to 3.5

Birmingham uni: It has some recognition in the UK. It has the 23rd position as the best university in the UK. It doesn’t seem to have much of an international recognition though. They require a second honours degree 2:1 equivalent to 3.0 GPA.

London Met: It is certainly lowly ranked. It has 115th position as the best university in the UK. It has no international recognition at all. I’m treating this uni as a safety school, just in case I’m out of luck and the other three unis don’t accept me. It is also located in expensive London. They require a 2:11 degree too equivalent to 2.7 GPA.

FYI: I know there isn’t much funding for international students, but there is not much funding to study a masters in the US either. So I prefer to go abroad, since I do want to study something international. I will apply for a good old student loan… The usual American way for funding education, so that is not an issue for me.

Also thanks for the website, I will look into it too! :)

I would look at your options as organized into tiers:

1: LSE
2: Warwick, Birmingham
3: London Met

London Met is probably not worth your time because with your marks there are plenty of other safety options that offer much more in terms of teaching, research, and networking opportunities. Warwick and Birmingham are solid universities with pretty decent IR/IPE programs. The LSE is world class–best in the UK for IR, IPE, and Economics. Oxbridge was the back-up plan for many people at LSE. I’m not sure about your work/internship experience, but based on your grades consider LSE a reach (for example, MSc IR acceptance rate is roughly 15% and most applicants have met the grade requirements). The LSE environment is competitive, but also very social with lots to do in London.

I’m a little surprised the OP didn’t mention Aberystwyth. It may not be in England but it has an excellent IR dept.

IR at Aberystwyth is great, but a few things hold it back: 1) little reputation outside the UK and academic IR in particular; 2) remote location within a university generally viewed as average; 3) low entry standards; and 4) a focus on Critical Theory, which means that government/business entities aren’t really actively recruiting on campus.

Thanks Anobervation!

I have done more research and checked the UK student universe webpage provided by Cupcake, and boy did I find out about new useful things! I have now checked London Met out of my list for sure!

(My Info again: BA from a state university in Florida, no ivy. Cumulative GPA 3.52 (It will probably go up, just for small insignificant decimals). Political Science-International Relation GPA 3.9 and Economics 3.0 (This one changes because by the time I graduate this will be my economic major GPA). BUT AGAIN DO UK UNIS LOOK AT CUMULATIVE OR MAJORS GPAS - I’M DOING A DOUBLE DEGREE.

Can you please help me decide which to consider, I think I want to apply to 4 unis and if absolutely necessary a 5th uni… No more…Take a look at my new list: Please let me know about international recognition, acceptance probability, and if its a nice place to live for a year:
