Hello! I just finished my post-bac in premedicine (undergrad in psyc). I'm applying to medical school this summer for fall 2013. I have just been accepted into two 1-year MS programs. One is heavy research based and includes a master's thesis. The other is heavy coursework based (physiology, biochem, molecular bio). I currently only have the basic pre-med requirements completed.

The research based MS program is at Northwestern while the coursework based program is at Loyola. I have 2 years of clinical research experience and one year of benchwork lab experience in a developmental bio lab. Anyone have advice on whether the research based MS or coursework based MS would be more beneficial for medical school applications? Would further higher level bio classes be more beneficial than more research?

Thank you!

Are these funded or are you paying for them? I would not take any loans or squander cash on a masters if you are moving into med school. If you’ve completed your pre-reqs, you shouldn’t need a masters, too.

Also, are youmost interested in clinical practice or research-oriented medicine?

If you’re interested in a MD/PhD or research-oriented MD program, then the research based program will be more useful in building your app. If you’re more interested in clinical medicine, then it really doesn’t matter which you choose.

BTW, someomom makes a good point about cost. Med school is expensive! Try not to go into [more] debt for a MS.

Isn’t the Loyola program a SMP? It’s a fine program, but the question is ‘Why?’ to either. If your app is competitive today, then you don’t need a Master’s. Instead, go do something useful with your life for one year. But if you are considering an MD/PhD program, the heavy research program is the no-brainer.
