MAT vs. BA+30

Hey, I'm currently in a 5 year MAT (masters of teaching) program, and I was wondering is an MAT considered a BA+30 (because its only an extra year) or a masters.

*I am asking this because I know there is also a masters of education.

Thanks!

From what I’ve read, an MAT is a full Masters degree, and a BA+30 just indicates 30 hours of student teaching (or something along those lines). That’s what I’m going for once I begin applying for colleges this coming fall.

I’m in NY and a MAT is a Masters degree in teaching which is usually awarded when your undergrad degree is in the subject area you wish to teach but not in education.

If you are in a 5 year MAT program I would assume you would be receiving both a BA or BS degree plus your Master’s in teaching after 5 years and you’re good to go.

Here, a BA+30 is a Bachelor of Arts plus 30 graduate credit hours. The MS in Education is usually 30 credit hours so that may be what you are referring to. At least here in NY you have to have the actual Masters to teach, not just plus 30 Grad hours. Could be different in your state.

I have a BA in history and a MAT in Social Studies education.

Thanks for your help!
