Hey, I was wondering if I should take MAT21A or MAT21B. I’m going into engineering and I just got a 4 in the AP calc AB test. Should I skip straight to B or should I go into A? Is MAT21B hard?

MAT 21B is mostly integration. You’ll learn antiderivatives, integration by parts, trig substitutions, volumes of revolution, partial fractions, areas of a curve, some work problems, and I can’t remember what else. If you have a good professor like I did for MAT 21B (I had Schulten), then it’s manageable, but you have to study a lot for that class.

Not recommended. A college course isn’t the same as an AP course. You’ll need to have a solid calc foundation for engineering anyways. Worst case scenario is you get an A in a college calculus course. That’s not a bad thing.

However if you do go into 21A, although have credit for the course you still need to take the math placement to place into it (silly system, trust me I know).

Thanks sopranokitty for that info,
I took the math placement test and I got placed into 21A, but since I have those AP credits, I’m able to skip straight to 21B if I wanted to.
I want to but I’m not sure how rigorous the course is

Like I said, not recommended. You don’t need to do that and you can get an A in 21A that will appear on your transcript. Not a good idea if considering grad/professional school.

I got a 4 on the Calc AB test and decided to start with 21A. 21A didn’t really prepare me much for 21B. That said, it may be good idea to take 21A for the GPA boost. I found 21A a lot easier than 21B, and since its your first quarter, it might be nice to start off easy (my experience is with only two professor, though. It might be different for you.)

Thanks for the input everyone, I’m leaning more towards 21A!!
