Mater's in software Engineering

What kind of degree would be good to go into a master’s in software engineering since most colleges dont offer that as a major. I want to get my bachelor’s in information technology and minor in computer sicence or software engineering. yes I know computer science is better for software but I really dont want to take that…

The question to me becomes this: why do you want a masters?

Software Engineering is already a rare degree - a masters in it is nearly unheard of. The reason a masters in SE is rare is because masters and PhD’s focus on academics much more than undergrad does. If you’re looking for the academic version of SE, it’s usually a subfield in CS. Most of the professionally focused masters in SE are usually found online, directly targeted at professionals, who are usually already working and looking for a bit more.

So, why not go to work and come back later for the MS?

Of course, the other obvious question is why are you against getting a masters in CS, but I think that is secondary to why you want a masters at all.

I’d think a Bachelors in IT would be fine for admission into a Masters for Software Engineering.

I don’t see a problem with going for a MS in SE rather than a MS in CS. The MS in SE seem to be more practical and more in tune with what most programmers do professionally. But I agree that maybe you should work for two or three years before you go for your Masters.

I tend to agree with @PengsPhils. In many circles, Software Engineering is more about the process of writing quality software than the act of writing quality software – more akin to Quality Assurance than designing the actual product. A Master’s degree in SE after a technical BS would not add much of a salary boost (unless there are other motives for obtaining an MS degree.)
