math 104...what textbook?

I was planning on buying on amazon and wondered what book i should buy. i know its supposed to be stewarts 6th edition calc but theres "6E" and "6E: Early Transcendentals." Thanks!

I was trying to find it too. Stewart, right?

Anyways what math background do you have? I’m trying to decide if I really should take MATH104. I took both AB and BC in high school but heard that 104 is really, really hard so in a really cheap move I registered for 103.

Yup - stewart. My school only offered AB and thats the only calc experience that I have, unfortunately. The math website said that getting a 5 on my AB exam means I should be OK taking 104 and also said that 103 is for people with absolutely no experience. You’ve got both classes so you should be fine. My advisor also told me that in the first week or so, the math dept has a placement test that you can take to make sure youre in the right class. I’m nervous for penn math too haha

Math 104 isn’t that bad. The thing is lots of freshmen come in and take it. Some are much better at math than others so if you’re not the strongest and don’t work very hard at it you could end up with a C or lower. If you need math 104 for your major go and take it. If you don’t need math 104 or higher for your major it might not kill you to push it off and get a feel for how stuff at Penn is like. I’m sure most people would do perfectly fine in it, but I’ve had some less mathematically inclined friends do poorly in it.

Yeah, my friend got a C in the class after having done well in AB in high school.

I got a 5 on AB and a 4 on BC but kind of always got B’s in the classes themselves at my (crazy competitive) high school… and I looked at the old exams for each class on the math department’s website and I kind of remember it all but it gives me such a headache; I want to be done. I might just take 103 to review basic (and most useful in real life, imo) calc and maybe get an A in calc for the first time. But I feel so cheap, lol. Gah can’t decide. I’ll talk to people once I get to Penn, maybe? I just want to fulfill a foundational approach and either 103 or 104 will do that for me, so…

Sorry that I’m using your topic to talk about my problem. I hope you find the textbook. I want to get the textbook early so that I can familiarize myself with the material a little beforehand, because I’m nervous haha.

I belive you can get away with just 6E, but don’t quote me on it.

Sugar, if you want the easy way out take 103. If you want more of a challege, to have prereqs for a Wharton transfer, or are considering a major that requires math, take 104.

i’m worried about buying textbooks now though cuz they could change. i’m gonna wait until august or later b/c idk if they’d tell us our textbooks by then.
