hi everyone. i was wondering whether i should take math 20a or 20b? i am a biotech major as an entering freshman, and i got a 4 on my ap calc exam. should i take 20a to get adjusted to college math or should i skip into 20b? how hard are these math classes? and how different are they?

Take 20A if you need to review rules for taking derivatives/finding critical points/finding local minima and maxima/limits/finding tangent line to a function. Else just go to 20B.

20a vs 20b, which is harder?

Calculus II (20B) is usually considered the toughest of the three.

i suggest just reviewing ur math notes or reviewing a review book and then skip to 20b :]

did u take calc AB or BC?

I took Calculus AB and got a 5 , then I took Calculus BC and got a 4…do you guys recommend that I go straight to Math 20C ?

Crash Nitro - what are your other classes?

I will skip 20A

dtang - skip to 20C. u’ve already had 2 years of HS calculus, so u should be alright :]

for someone who has never taken calc but did all right on the placement test, 20A is recommended, right?

If you have never taken Calculus and your major does not require it, do your GPA a favor and stick with the 10 series. I know many people whom I lived with last year, who started in the 20 series and then dropped to the 10 series. The 10 series is easier than the 20 series but it still is no walk in the park, you will still need to put time into the class and don’t let yourself fall behind.

thanks a lot Richzz.

keep in mind though if you even think you might want to switch your major later to one that requires the 20 series its helpful to just take it to start with, so you dont have to retake all of them for half credit, but if you positive that youd never want to major in anything with that heavy of math, stick with the 10 series

well i got a pretty late date for class enrollment, 27th at around 1, so i dont know which classes i will be able to take
but i plan to take
MAE9
Chem6a
BENG 1
and then a math course
or some GEs like warren writing or an area study

anyways i got a 4 on ap calc ab, its just ive forgotten a lot of calculus over the summer. i had a really good teacher tho, and i think i learned most of it well.

beng 1 might be way waitlisted, but thats not a class you need to take right away, and if you feel that you had a good teacher, then you should just start with 20b, you just might have to review some basic stuff when youre doing problems but i think youll be fine

if i’ve gotten a 4 on the calc BC exam,

should i take 10b or 10c?

10c, it would be a waste to take 10b

HONESTLY, skip 20a. Its basic derivs. 20b will be just fine. Even if you took AB. The first half of the class should be all review, but watch out on the second half. You learn series, convergences, Taylor Series(hated that). Yeah. I didn’t like 20c at ALL. 20d was very very interesting if you are into the whole differentiable stuff. and 20f was soooo easy/fun. I recommend also that you take 20f before 20d (it is much easier this way). GL!
