I just read that for PROSPECTIVE MATH MAJORS:

"Previously Math 212(103) (Intermediate Calculus) and Math 221(104) (Linear Algebra) were prerequisites for the major. We now allow the course, Math 222(105) (Vector Calculus) to replace Math 212(103) as a prerequisite for the Math major. Note that Math 222(105) has Math 221(104) as a prerequisite"

My question is: would it be good to take 221 (Linear Algebra and Applications) in my first semester freshman year, like they recommend, followed by 222 (Vector Calculus) in the second semester.

Or should I just take 212 (Multivariable Calculus)---which really does seem to be the more common route?

And if I do pass up 212 altogether, will I not need to know much of that for later math courses, if I do proceed to major in math?

Just curious if anyone has some advice for first year math class selection.

Thanks

I personally only know of one (prospective) math major who took 212 instead of 221 during the first semester. 222 covers all of 212’s material and some more and will prepare you better for the upper-level classes.

What should an Econ major take? Will 202 (the Econ-only one) meet the prerequisites for higher math classes? If not, should I start out in 221 or 212 if I want to minor in Math?

Thanks for all the help.

Best place to look for Duke math placement information is at [Duke Mathematics Department](http://www.math.duke.edu/first_year/placement.html) - (it looks like everyone above has seen that, but just for posterity).

jman1204 - I think much depends on your multivariable exposure so far. Have you had the material from MTH 212? Not sure if you have seen [Duke Mathematics Department](http://www.math.duke.edu/first_year/placement.html) but basically its advice is that you write Dr. Bray to get things figured out :)

Stradivarius - 202, 212, and 222 are often listed together in the pre-reqs as “and one of 202, 212, or 222” for upper level courses where that material is required. MATH 333, 361S, 487, 490S, 561, and 581 (which is strange - since it is Mathematical Finance!) seem to be the exceptions but likely with those there’s a “consent of instructor” to be had.
