Math 225 for Engineers

Is this a hard class? I see it is only a 2 hour class. I think you have to take it second semester with Calculus ll..seems like a lot of Math. Is it a lot of work? Maybe a class I can take over the summer next year?

Well I don’t know who teaches it anymore (as Dr. Ghrist left for U Penn), but I took this class the first semester it was offered as a pilot course, and it was absolutely amazing. Difficult to be sure, but it was very VERY helpful come junior and senior year. Then again, I took it as a pilot course 4 years ago so it might have changed.

huh? MATH 225 is a little course on linear algebra. boneh3ad, (lol) you may be confusing this class with calculus II for engineers (which totally ruled). i’ve heard that math 225 is not so bad.

Yeah I definitely mixed it up. Haha. They changed the numbering scheme I think twice in my 4 years at UIUC, so sometimes the numbers throw me off. Either way, the Calc II for engineers was awesome.

So you are saying that Math 225 Linear algebra (a 2 hour class) is not that bad?

I’ve never taken it, so my opinion isn’t worth much, but I’ve heard that it isn’t very difficult.

If you are an engineer, it is a waste of time since you will just have to take 415 later on though.

some don’t. civil engineering students are required to take 225 and don’t have to take 415.

I took it a little over a year ago. The class varies a bit by professor. For some reason, few 225 teachers speak English, but the class is pretty straightforward as long as your professor doesn’t test on proofs. My exams were all straight algebra which was just manipulating matrices, etc. I got an A. My class met twice a week (lecture only) which is why it’s 2 credit hours while there were 2 exams plus a final and weekly homework. Hope this helps.

It all depends on who teaches it, my class actually didnt have a professor, just a TA, same with a friend of mine. The class is fairly straight forward, as long as you study you’ll be fine, not too difficult what so ever. Be warned, most of the TAs and professors in the math department dont speak english very well, but youll get used to it.
