math 55 as a freshman (fall sememster)?

i got a 5 on Calc BC. is it doable?

Ap scores are out?

Should be fine, are you a math major?

Calculus BC is irrelevant to math 55.

@shooba no i’m not a math major.

@blahblah9393 so do you think it’s doable?

Isn’t math the only major that requires Math 55? (CS now has its own version, CS 70.)

Here is what it covers:
[Math 55 | Department of Mathematics at University of California Berkeley](Math 55 | Department of Mathematics at University of California Berkeley)

i’m not gonna take classes that simply fulfill the major requirement.
i know an alumni who recommended me to take math 55, but from what i’ve seen, most freshman take 53 or 54 but not 55. i’m just a bit worried that it might be too rigorous for a freshman (as the course is implied that it is a sophomore level class).

Actually, Math 1A is a more common frosh math course than Math 53 or 54, which are more commonly taken by frosh who have a 5 on AP calculus BC (equivalent to the frosh-level Math 1A and 1B). I.e. Math 53 and 54 are normally considered sophomore level math courses, even though frosh commonly take them if they have AP credit.

However, due to the content being significantly different from the “continuous” math of calculus, some students find Math 55 much harder or easier than calculus.

Dunno what previous experience you’ve had.

I have an A/A-/A+ in every class so far except for CS70 (equivalent to math 55), and got a B. It’s hard if you never have done proofs before, or if you haven’t done basic logic before. It was the first time for me, so it turned out to be ridiculously hard for me. It’s my 2nd favorite class so far though after cs170 (I’m CS).

@blahblah9393 got a B in CS70 or math 55?

The thing with 55 (well, I took cs70 so I’m speaking from that perspective) is that it is very different from other math classes you may have taken if you’ve never taken upper level math. This means that it’s challenging for some and a breeze for others - I personally found cs70 with Sahai to be one of the most fun/interesting classes I’ve taken here, and I find it a lot easier to put time into a class that I enjoy. Would my opinion have changed if I struggled? idk.

I recommend you sign up for the course and sit in until the drop deadline to see if it’s for you or not.

What major are you though?

i intend on majoring somethng related to bio and/or chem

I’d recommend studying some of the material over the summer. I’m an incoming freshman, but am going to be skipping it as I am going to take the equivalent in a community college. From what I’ve heard/seen with my experience with Math 54/53 equivalents(which I note were actually more difficult than the berkeley ones based off of the finals I’ve seen for math 54/53), that its definately doable to study the entire material beforehand and ace the class. Its just you want to make sure you retain the material as you head into the class
