I’m sure that they’re good departments, but I was just curious if anyone knows anything about the quality of math and physics at Amherst? thanks

bueller? anyone?

Math and Physics aren't so popular at Amherst from what I know. However, pretty much every subject is good. The science courses are really challenging and the science department prepares you very well if you want to go to grad school. See if you can log in into the student section and search the classes.

yea, i figured they wouldn't be too popular there, which is good for me since I plan on doubling in those...smaller classes, which is never a bad thing. i've looked at the classes quite a few times, they have a good selection, i just hope the labs and such are of good quality...thanks for the input!

You are welcome. So you are an acceptee.

yes i am...i applied ED. i'm going to play soccer there...are you a student/acceptee/hopeful?

That's cool. I am a RD applicant. It is not my first choice but I am looking forward to getting accepted to Amherst.

nice, where else are you looking? best of luck at all of them...but amherst is the best, obviously haha

If you want really good math/physics in a LAC, I think Williams and Wesleyan might be better. Wesleyan is actually really good in the sciences... because it actually has some small grad programs in the sciences, the science departments are top-notch and have lots of research.

goalie r u a guy or girl

bjwrh, ill keep what you have said in mind come april when i have my amherst rejection letter in my hand and finally decide on considering other schools that i applied to besides the insane reaches, like wesleyan.

redbull, i'm a guy

yea, i've heard that williams is good in the sciences; but i could never be that far in the middle of nowhere...and besides, i'm kinda stuck at amherst anyways

amherst looks like it has quality programs, i was just wondering if anyone had any experience or heard any specifics about the departments there.

My D is a math major at Smith but may take a class at Amherst next year. Unfortunately, I can't shed light on any specific courses/profs but the sense she has from an Amherst student or two that she's taken classes with at Smith are that the department at Amherst is decent.

Just an opinion until a better founded one comes along.

forgive my ignorance but what departments is Amherst most famous for? I have thought Amherst ( like most LACs) is a 'well-rounded' school and I didn't do much research on any particular demparmental strenghts. I'll probably will go for double majoring in a science and a humanity subject.

@TheDad: what do you mean by 'decent'? I don't mean to challenge you, just some clarification..

I have a friend at Amherst who's an economics major, and has taken a lot of classes in the math department. From what he's told me, he's always been satisfied with the quality of courses offered in that department. Hope that helps some!

"Decent" in this case is a minimum of "good", upper boundary undetermined but probably not "spectacular" as in an arbitrary Top 10 or Top 20 department. The best I can do right after breakfast....

malawi, amherst IS strong in every department, that's why it's a top-tier school. it's probably most famous for its foreign languages, english and other humanities...

thanks for all your input, everyone
