Are there any math major out there that could tell me a little bit about math at penn?

Yo. What do you need to know?
Rule #1) DOn't let the calculus track classes deter you
What do you want to do with your degree?

I really want to know about the general quality of the math departement, availbility of teachers, etc.

I'm thinking about doing math and economics to move on into I-banking, or trade in my country.

About rule#1, why? Are they notoriously difficult, big, boring?

I'll know better next semester when I get into the meat of my studies, but I've liked the actual faculty I've interacted with quite a bit. The teachers usually love to talk to students.

A #1 is because they're not difficult, just often poorly taught...they aren't usually taught by penn faculty, but rather visiting professors, and the subject matter is kind of blah.

Also, since you said ibanking, I hereby move this thread from the realm of the useful into the realm of mockery.

^crap, I'd rather have it stay in the realm of the useful haha. No, regarding Ibanking, its just something I'd be willing to do before grad school, I'm really not that interested in it.

I've heard the same thing about a lot of math courses at other schools., and about how it really gets better once you get to higher level courses.

Thanks a lot for your help.

I'm also thinking of doing a Math/Econ double-major, going into i-banking, and maybe eventually moving into academia (once I've become comfortable)...or not, if the money is too good or I actually like it a lot. Anyways, I was also curious about the math program at Penn, since I really have not heard much about it.

^awesome another math/econ..hopefully we'll get to see each other come next year haha:)....well anyways, anymore comments regarding the quality of math at penn?

SWEET SOMEONE ELSE WANTS TO BE AN iBANKER?!?!?!?!!

^I'm assuming that one's in the realm of mockery...hahaha...just wondering, whats it you don't like about ibanking? besides the fact that all ibankers have sold their souls to the devil j/k ( or am I?)

The thing I don't like about ibanking is I can never be one oh woe is me woe is meeee

But really, it's just such a waste of an education. It's like spending four years proving you could get a 2400 on the SAT, just so you can "distinguish" yourself enough to get a shot at a job that will use nothing you learned!

^I guess.... but in my country going into academia is going into poverty, and I mean serious poverty. So a lot of the people in my country end up going into stuff such as Ibanking,in small local firms though, to actually be able to pay off their debts.

What country are you from?

costa rica, but most Ibanking firms here are a plain joke, I mean, seriously small

Do you want to work there when you leave college?

And do you know Valeria?

Not sure yet. I guess its always an option, basically to be close to my family and friends, but I'd rather head off to Europe.

Valeria?

She's from costa rica. She's an '09er.

What school did she go to? I know various Valerias..but I'm really not sure

Various Valerias, very vexing.

Valeria Montero

No, sorry. But its cool to know that there are costa ricans at penn. I believe another guy from costa rica got in this year, he's from country day school, not sure of his name though.
