I know MIT, Stanford, Cornell, Carnegie Mellon, and Berkeley have good CS/engineering programs (thats why they're above yale and columbia obviously) but i'm iffy about some of the other universities. How are their math/CS/engineering programs?

On a side note, how are their econ department? I really like math and I thought of going into econ until the economy kinda died so I dont know a lot about how good the econ dept is at schools.

from my indirect experience with stanford econ (my friends have spoken volumes about it), it’s made for SPECIFIC people. it’s annoying hard to major in it at times, and the head honcho at the econ department can be a jerk. but nonetheless, the department is outstanding.

duke’s econ department is expansive and very strong as well. many dukies are successful and reap the benefits of great professors and programs and go on in various directions. some become major ceos and cfos. so yeap.

Columbia… i am unsure off. but it’s extremely strong. i remember when choosing between the latter two, a student told me to go to columbia for finance, and duke for management/marketing. and sure enough she was right.

and …jhu is effing scary. lOL JK. but not really. :x

Unless you have a specific reason for applying to Yale, I would remove it from the list and replace it with Princeton, which is stronger in Math, CS and Engineering.

Rice and Columbia are good in quantitative fields.

I would Agree about the Yale bit… they are trying to build up their engineering department. Princeton is better (they have John Forbes Nash…, and other greats.) I was considering Yale, but ultimately took it off my list.

i thought duke didn’t have a management or marketing or business major?

they both don’t have majors in management/marketing, but each school is going to approach their education in a different way. professors have different strengths.

and yeah both do lack a business school, but i think if you come out of duke or columbia wanting to pursue business, you won’t get stopped just 'cause you don’t have an undergraduate business degree. and plus, there’s always mba, etcetc.

I guess even if colleges dont have a specific econ/finance major they still offer econ/finance classes…

One of my parents’ friend’s daughter goes to Yale and they’re always talking about how great Yale is…i know Yale is not that strong in CS/engineering and Princeton does have Nash and is big (amongst the ivies anyway) for math/cs…

thanks for all ur responses.

hows JHU? someone said earlier that its scary…idk why
