Math for HS senior interested in Pitt nursing

OP here: I appreciate everyone’s response. However, I think those qualified to answer the question are those are are Pitt nursing students. That was who the question was directed to.

Having said that, I agree that it might be in my daughter’s best interest to take Calc simply as a way of demonstrating the continuous rigor of her classes.

Any other advice about getting into Pitt’s nursing program (from Pitt nursing students) will be greatly appreciated!!!

Admissions is getting quite competitive at Pitt for nursing. Calculus is NOT required. However, calculus is perceived as a challenging course by admissions. Your daughter does not have to take Honors or AP Calculus. Standard calculus at a highly regarded high school is looked upon more favorable than AP Stats. However, Statistics for Nursing majors is required at Pitt. At one time, stats was acceptable, however, there is now a required stats for nursing majors only. (check this out on the nursing site)
I would not recommend the consumer math- maybe another AP science course would be useful or AP psychology(with a 4 or 5- your d can place out of the required intro to psych course and then take another course and eventually this will lighten her load-
encourage your d to take challenging courses, be successful and work on raising the act or sat score. also apply EARLY!!! good luck-

klfrech – It might help to have your D demonstrate her interest in nursing by volunteering in some capacity in a health-care setting. It probably doesn’t have to be 100’s of hours, but it can’t hurt to have some time.

She actually spent a summer volunteering at one of the local hospitals. So glad she did that!
