I was recently accepted to Haverford and right now it is probably my top choice, but I was wondering about the strength of its math program. I've read that the math department is good, but can anybody compare it to to other LACs (Carleton, Grinnell, Vassar). Also what graduate schools do Haverford students get into? Info from a current or past math major would be greatly appreciated.

Ditto about computer science program…

This is really a matter of opinion because the distinctions here are pretty fine. But, among Haverford and the three other LACs you listed, Carleton clearly has the best math department IMO. It is extremely highly regarded by grad schools and employers, and year after year it consistently ranks at or near the top of all LAC math departments including the other three in your list. But, Grinnell and Haverford also have reputations for strong math departments that place their top students into grad programs and good jobs.

You might try to connect with Haverford students on the Haverford 2016 FB page to answer your questions. You could also contact Admissions directly at either school to try to learn more. It is not always easy to get an answer, but it is better to get the answer directly from the school if you can. You might even ask if there is an Alum who majored in math that you can contact.

Griffen is understandably proud of being at Carleton. It is a very good college, as is Haverford. If you attend ANY of these schools you will receive a fabulous education from professors who are leaders in their fields. Don’t forget the other factors in your selection, each school has a different character and is in different parts of the country.

I prefer Haverford over both Carl and Grinnell for a variety of reasons, but I was
wondering if they had fairly similar math departments, or if one clearly stood out.

I quote b@r!um’s post from last year: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/11804322-post2.html

I second worldspirit’s suggestion of joining the FB group. There are plenty of discussions going on there and several current students are also in the group and they can help to answer your questions!

Here’s another thread about the math department at Haverford: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/haverford-college/1018235-interview-math-question.html

Thanks to everybody, I would still like to talk to a current or former student, but I can prbly do that on fb or through admissions, once again thanks.
