Does anyone have an opinion of or information about the math department at Wellesley?
Im not looking for comparisons with other colleges. As I love math and I love Wellesley and plan to go this fall, just need some help to decided the major.

Thanks in advance!

OH MY GOD!! I absolutely adore the math department here! I am so glad you asked!

Every teacher I’ve had here I have loved. I had Professor Volic first semester of firstyear, and he is such a joy. He gives a five minute break in the middle of every class, he is so so smart, and his exuberance about math is so obvious and wonderful. Then I had Professor Chang, the best professor ever, in my opinion. He has extremely high standards and works so hard with his students, and LOVES math. Both of these professors are amazing.

The math department itself is outstanding. They are sending a student to Cornell, and Dartmouth, and I think Arizona next year for grad school. I think 5 or 6 people are doing Math REUs this summer. There is a math seminar every monday, where students or professors present research and lunch is provided before. There’s also a math tea every month. We’ve have a math major dinner or lunch every semester, where the head of the Department buys a massive amount of chinese food. The math club meets once a week, and we generally play ping pong and nerd out about math. There are about four colloquia every semester, which are lectures given by outside professors.

Basically the department is wonderful. Both academically and environment wise, it is a wonderful group of people. Working on psets happens both individually and in groups, which is great because I like working alone, but if I’m ever super struggling I know who to go to, and everyone is eager to help. So yeah. AWESOME department!

Feel free to pm me with any questions!

thank you prelude, I can’t wait to join now, how is the workload in Math department? anyone double majored? anyone taking course in MIT? what kind of research opportunities there?

The one thing you should know about the math department at Wellesley is that the department is for pure mathematics. Every other year they offer a topics in applied mathematics course, but generally once you get to the 200 level, everything will be proofs-based. That is great if you want to go to math grad school, but it is not necessarily for everyone. If you’re interested in an applied math program, Wellesley isn’t the best place for that, unless you want to major in something else besides math – econ, physics, etc.

On that note, many people end up double majoring. I have known math and English double majors, but for the math department an overwhelming majority of the double majors are math and econ. That is because econ grad schools want students who have had a math background.

Some students do take math at MIT, especially once they have reached the 300 level.

Research opportunities – there are math REUs all over the country, a women in mathematics summer program at Carleton in Minnesota… you can also research or choose to go learn about a topic of your choice with a professor.
