Maybe you just need to take a different approach to math.. Richard Feynman, the Nobel prize winning physicist, used to use completely different symbols and shortcuts and it was made infinitely easier. (Although the symbols thing got abandoned because it proved to be difficult explaining it to other people.) I hate math, but the only thing I can appreciate is that... there is always an answer.

they are (too) challenging-they're simply more mind-numbing than challenging.

i think math is easy ... but i think english is so stupid. its funny,i love the "definite" things about english, like spelling and grammar lol. but i hate stuff like having to find out the poet's "meaning" in his stupid poem. who cares??? and we'll never truly know the "meaning" because the poet is DEAD OKAY?!!?? SO WHY DO WE BOTHER!!!!!!!!!!!??????????? ughhhh lol. i guess i like math cause there's always an ANSWER (what zella said)

i sort of think math is in the middle of history and english... history is always FACTS; english is mostly BS and whatever you feel like/however you want to interpret something. in math there's always a right answer but you have freedom[of interpretation and stuff] in approaching & solving the problem

math sucks when you have to finish precalc(+trig) in four months. >:(

Some math is hard, like what we're doing right now. Stupid distributions. I got assigned this project/homework thing and I don't even know where to begin. My teacher has this cruel way of teaching us something, convincing us we can do it and that its easy (all of this in class) and then giving us homework and tests with problems that are 100 times as hard. I really hate statistics.

calculus is sweet.

f00k english

ilovemath... what history are you taking? I know at least that in my history class (IB HL French), we talk a bit about the facts and then move on to cover different interpretations of events for the rest of the week/month/whatever. I would hate history if you had to always spit out facts, but it is for sure my favorite subject because of all the critical analysis. International Politics is also an awesome class at my school, especially because it's the credit portion of MUN, so you get to analyse the facts and present the opinion of x country or NGO.

Math was alright... I'm pretty good at math and I enjoy problem solving, but the stress of having it graded is NOT cool. For some reason after getting an 87 in calc (scaled!!), I ended up with a 7 on the ridiculously easy May 05 IB exam (a whole written question on the ambiguous case was such a gift! we did that in grade 9). Hooray. No more math for marks.

Science...
Biology is good. Definetly my favorite science. And while the introductory levels require a lot of memorization, once you get into it Biology is pretty cool. We actually went to the university labs to try out some DNA profiling stuff. I also love ecology. Yay trees! It's most likely because of camp... but I still find it really interesting.
Chem is okay but since a few horrible teachers I'm having an interesting time recovering from my dislike of chemistry. It really depends on the subject... I like things that I can tie into Bio and even International Politics (like the fuels and energy option of the chem IB exam)... we covered that one in junior year and I had just been to a MUN symposium where we debated over "alternative sources of energy" for almost a day and a half. Needless to say that unit was my highest mark of the year.
Physics I never could understand, so I'm just not taking it. I just can't visualise it. This also might be partly the fault of evil chem teacher x who also taught me intro physics. I'm sure that I could do it if I wanted, but that would mean I'd have to take classes outside school... hell no! It's definetly not worth it for me because I'm probably going into Arts (Poli Sci/History/International Development).

English is great. I've always loved reading, and I really enjoy the more creative parts of it... like last years Internal Oral Presentation. I wrote a Monologue on Heart of Darkness (Kurtz' point of view). Oh, and I love when we read Shakespeare because we always have to present a soliloquy to the class. Henry V... :D

French/Spanish really depend on the teacher. They can either be really boring or really fun. Luckily I've had awesome teachers all throughout high school with one exception (French Language Arts 10).

I love English. It forces me to constantly change the way I think in order to understand the points/themes in an author's work. History can be fun if taught properly. I don't care for reciting dry lists of dates, but actually learning the wars, battles, trading treaties, etc behind each date is pretty interesting. Learning about individual people who changed history is pretty cool. Science is great because it's not too mathematical to drive me insane but is based on observation which I enjoy. I enjoy Chemistry and Biology. Physics = death. Urgh. I understand the concepts but I can never seem to apply them properly. Perhaps I didnt work hard enough....but there were some people in my class who were knocking 100's easily without even READING THE BOOK. I had to struggle for my grade. I hate people like that. ><

Anyways, I don't like Physics or Math. It's just too...structured and formulaic for me. I have to think about the different possibilities, and in math, there is usually only ONE right answer. In English, there are many right answers. Math is rigid; English is flexible. But, this year I'm actually enjoying Math! Calculus is pretty interesting...it makes a lot of sense in fact. So yeah I guess it depends on how hard you work and how much respect you give to each class. Maybe if I respected and appreciated math more I would have done better...oh well.

cowgirl congrats on your 7 on IB (i know nothing about IB except i heard that a 7 was really good lol)

and im just taking regular honors US history.. its interesting and all but after learning the facts, thats pretty much it and we move on

I concur. Physics and Chem (and calculus) are subjects of the devil.

oh wow, a lot of you harbor a lot of antipathy towards various subjects...

i personally dislike math, but i'm good at it.
i despise history, but i am like a history savant somehow.
history has made me a good writer, so i pretty much dominate in english.

but i absolutely abhor physics!!!!

Sigh...I sense a lack of love for my beloved Physics.

I'm weeping.

i dont really abhor antipathy towards the subjects; there are subjects i like, and subjects i dont care about.

the critical thinking i develop during english and history, IMO is much more relevant to my life than calculus will ever be.

ALL SUBJECTS ARE EASY

but...
physics is the BEEFY science.. many fall prey.. even chem geniuses

and one thing.. BIOLOGY IS NOT A SCIENCE..
get that?!!?
memorization is no different from history
biology = pussy cat science

except its LOADS harder and LOADS more work than physics and chemistry. You actually have to think for the questions, very hard application questions, not just do math problems and a little thinking like in physics or chem.

I agree with logisticswizard. Bio isn't just memorization. You have to actually understand the processes. Not just memorize that when there's stress, for example, the sympathetic nerves stimulate the adrenal medulla, which secretes epinephrine and norepinephrine, and these hormones cause vasodilatation of ... and all the chain reactions... You need to understand.
Am good at math and physics. Yet I know bio isn't "pussy cat science." It's what is the science.

Bio is eh. As is English. Math is good. History is bad this year because my teacher is a raging idiot who often borders on sexual harassment (no joke).

understand what?

how things move from one place to another

how anticodons attach at the other end of t-rna?

COMON.. JSUT THINGS MOVING AROUND..

PHYSICS.. CONCEPTUALLY CAN GET IMPOSSIBLE
FINISH E & M , THEN COMMENT on BEING GOOD AT PHYSICS

bio is not a science
in history, armies move around too from virginia to south carolina
yea yea things secreting other things
armies came about through different movements and rallies..

I think your missing the point. In biology, you are not just told stuff to memorize. A portion of it is like that. A good teacher however gives you labs and tests that give you situations or problems not previosuly discussed in class that will actually challenge you. You only take bits and pieces of the memorization and throw them in to enhance your point. When physics gets conceptually impossible, you know it is getting pointless.

Math is just the application of some rules to some numbers (to me at least).

History is the memorization of hundreds of names, events, and dates.

Whenever I try to be creative in history, I always end up with a horrible grade. So I'm thinking about becoming a robot and selling my creativity to the devil.
