Math League Quesstion...Question..Error...Conspiracy

So yesterday we did the texas math league and it was question 3 where they have a really long number and say that one of the digits must be increased by one to make it a perfect square, and then it asks for the the value of the digit before the increase. The last digit (3) had to be increased to 4, so the answer should be 3 right?... but no! The answer key says 3 plus 1 equals 4, and the 4 is boxed up!

Anyone notice this/ take same test?

the answer is definitely 3. I had the same question for nj math league on friday.

Math League is aware that there was an error in the answer key. It is addressed when coaches go to the website to enter scores.

Ah I see.
THough I did not know that we all had the same questions! I thought it varied by state. Hm... I did sooo badly on this one for dumb mistakes. So mad.

Me too... i ended up with a 3. it sucked

i got a 5...yay! My school score (top 5) was a 25. that last problem was a killer.

btw, they acknowledge their mistake here.

yeah the same question was in florida math league...counting that question as correct i got a 4

what are everyone's scores so far for the three tests?

13... that 3 hit me like a brick wall

something really bad...i think a 12

15...not as good as I would like...

bad explanation of the question.......i could help.

i got 5 out of 6. I took it for the California Math League. Yea that 6th one was a doozie, but if u read ur AoPS chapter on Polynomials, that would have helped dramatically :)

14 overall 6 on this one... i really screwed up before, but i took it today, and it counts the 3 as correct...

I got a 4... I could have gotten a 5 but on the clock question I was thinking of my nephew's clock (he is only 8 months old and lives with me so I see it a lot) and it is divided up into 15 minute intervals in between the hours so I said that it was 3:15... ARGHH!!!

What is the Math League Competition?

Is it similar to Mandelbrot?

Easier than Mandelbrot individual, and much easier than Mandelbrot team. 6 questions per round, 6 rounds per year, 30 minutes. About like AMC-12 in difficulty. www.mathleague.com

Ahh ok... well I consider AMC-12 a lot easier than Mandelbrot.

I haven't taken the official AMC-12, but I've done some practice ones in math club.

On Mandelbrot, I've gotten 1-2 questions correct each round, which is horrible for me.
After I look at the solution, I see I could have easily gotten at least 4 correct.

My Mandelbrot team is 6 places away from 1st-tier.
We're doing National Level.

i have 15 so far (in WI)
dang... someone in our school has a 18... cRAZY
This test was sooo bad... i missed the SECOND question... how, idk... (i went up to 2^40. was too stressed to go down for the exponent. Dang it)

I coach a math team. I like the Math League tests because my group includes a big range of skill and age levels (USAMO qualifiers down to middle schoolers). The last question or two on Math League are generally hard enough to be interesting to the top students, but the youngest students can do something with it too. When we do Mandelbrot, it's good for the top students, but some of the young ones get zeroes on the indiv. round. I don't even have the youngest ones try to do the Mandebrot team round.
