Math Major / CS (Major/Minor)

Hello Internet,

I’m an undergrad at Rutgers U with two associate degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science from a county college… and have reached the point where I can graduate next semester with a Math Major and a CS minor. Here’s my issue. I do not get any financial aid or any other money at RU so all my money is what I earn and shell out. I want to double major in CS, but at this point it feels like my college career in CS keeps dragging on. I only have 3 more courses to take in Math and 2 more for CS minor which is fine but for a major I would have to stay an extra semester to do 6 more classes. I took a year off last year to fund this year at RU but it will probably take me another year to fund the next two semesters. So, I’m really at a crossroads here. I want to go through this semester feeling like I can afford just the next semester or I can keep worrying like always as to how I’m gonna get funds for another full year here. I just don’t know anymore. Any suggestions?

PS Don’t think that I hate school by any means. I’m a 4.0 student here and have graduated from my county col. with SCL honors. It’s just… getting tiresome.

Looks like the minor requires 6 courses, and the major requires 11 courses:

You may want to try applying for co-op jobs:

Depending on what you get for co-op or other jobs, it may help you make your decision later, based on how good your job prospects appear to be at the CS minor (as opposed to major) level, and how much you earn that can be put to an extra semester.

You could certainly get a job in Silicon Valley with a Math degree and six CS classes. I would expect the same around NYC, if that’s where you’re looking to work.
