Math Major transition to Mechanical Engineering Masters

Hey folks, I've got a question about transitioning into a master's program.

I graduated in 2008 with a math degree, and after being in the work force for a while (project management), I've decided to build my technical skills with a mechanical engineering master's degree.

I know that many schools will accept engineering grad students with non-engineering majors if you take additional pre-requisite classes. My problem is 1) It's too late to apply to many schools for fall 2011 and 2) I want to do it as cheaply and quickly as possible.

I'm thinking about taking as many pre-requisite classes at a JC this year as I can, then applying to grad school in 2012. I'm looking at good California schools -- Cal Poly, Berkeley, Stanford, etc. I have very high GRE scores and GPA which should boost my odds.

Will schools accept JC classes? Would it be better to take classes near the school I wish to go to? Or should I just work and save money this year and apply next year? Any thoughts on the situation are welcome.
