First off I would like to thank everyone on cc, because you guys give the best advice out there. Secondly I'm having difficulty deciding to major in the sciences (neural science) over my favorite subject area which is mathemathics. The math department at my school ranks amomg the top ten in the nation and gives out decent grades. Although it doesn't affect my chances of getting into med school, however would it be a disadvantage to major in math, in terms of getting lab internships and science research oriented projects which are almost mandatory to get into med school.

BDM was able to seure internships as an econ major and get into med school, so it can be done.

Does your school have an undergraduate program in computational biology/biostatistics? If so, instead of going for a pure math major, maybe you should look into that. If not, you can major in math and minor in biology you can find research in computational biology or biostatistics.

dk, major in math. and if you want to major in a science, major in physics or something, not biology. there is no substitute for the critical thinking skills that you learn as a math/quant. science major as opposed to the generic bio/chem major. i'm in your exact same position and i had no trouble finding research in quantitative bio / systems bio / computational bio / biophysics. this will convince you:

if you wouldn't mind me asking, what was your major molsysbio?

would majoring in math and minoring in biology be a ton of work?

I was a chemistry major, and did computational research. My PI welcomed math, physics, and comp sci majors with open arms. There's a lot of quantitative opportunities out there.

Get the pre-med requirements done, and just a math major will be fine.

Majoring in math and minoring in biology is as much work as your school wants it to be. Keep in mind you have to fulfill your major requirements, premed requirements, and general education requirements. At my school a bio minor consists of a year of intro bio and lab, a year of chemistry, and 4-5 upper level classes (depending on which bio track you take). For med school you will already be taking the year of intro bio, the year of intro chem, and probably a few more upper level biology classes.

math major.

now i see, thanks a lot guys
