Math majors in Financal Sector?

I'm planning on majoring in applied mathematics and japanese was wondering what some of the possible career opportunities that are out there. I.e. positions where I would use my math ablities rather than being a salesman (ibanking, etc). What are some of the salary potentials, travel opportunities, etc? Thanks!

Quantitative analysts are in demand at the investment banking houses.

See the art of problem solving MATH JAM discussion entitled "Careers in Finance at DE Shaw group" with Sasha Schwartz, a past MATHCOUNTS National Champion, IMO gold medalist, USAMO winner, and 2-time Putnam fellow who now works at D.E. Shaw.

Or try the careers in mathematics forums at AOPS. Do a search on quant(s) on CC. I have done some posting on this.

So do the majority of quants have graduate degrees (M.S., Ph.D etc.) or are they often hired straight out of undergrad?

Quants are hired out of undergrad as well. But their problem solving skills are on par with PhDs.
