Math PhD admissions/rejections thread

Hey SBUMathgrad, did you call/email and ask about the status of your application? I have yet to hear one way or the other from anywhere. Probably a bad sign, hmm...

SBUMathgrad, do you know if Cornell has already sent out all acceptances?

To the previous two posters: I am not sure if they sent out all acceptances. I don't want to speculate because I have no idea and I don't want to give anyone false hope or false rejection either. I was in touch with Cornell because some of my documents did not get there on time, so I emailed them a week or two ago if everything is there and if I can get an update on my app status and they replied back today saying they did get everything but they will not be making me an offer.

UIUC was really high on my list of schools, oh well. I guess in the next few weeks I'll probably be getting more rejection letters. If I can get into my safety schools I'll be happy with how the admissions game turned out.

Congrats to everyone who did get in though. At least someone got in to some good schools.

Thanks for the clarification. I did the same thing (as they didn't update the track your status stuff on embark) and they replied me on Monday stating that my application was OK.

I emailed UIUC (I was pretty sure I didn't get in since everyone else got offers and I didn't) and they indeed rejected me.

So far I got rejected from Cornell and UIUC for sure, and I'm not even going to bother calling Berkeley to verify. Cornell and Berkeley were reaches for me, but I thought I had a chance at UIUC. It also seems Northwestern has been giving out acceptances and I suspect I won't be given admissions to NW either.

This is really not turning out the way I wanted it to turn out. I thought this was going to be my big "come back." Live and learn.

Also got the UIUC email today.

Sorry to hear that, SBU. I'm going through a similar sort of deal. The life of an academic always has its ups and downs but I've never experienced anything like the last few weeks. There is still time until all the dust settles however and hopefully we'll both be OK when it does.

SBU- We're pulling for you! All it takes is one acceptance.

Today is Friday the 13th and if you look at the gradcafe a lot of schools sent out acceptances today, so it was good luck for some.

Well just to update you all on my misery, aparently UPenn, Ohio State, Georgia Tech have released decisions and I haven't heard anything, also I just realized today that two of my safeties might not even have my application. Still, as you all have said it just takes one.

orangelights, i wouldn't start worrying yet. only one person has claimed hearing something from penn (unless you know something i don't know) and i get the feeling that schools below the top 10 send out waves of acceptances.

I agree with crispyk, orangelights. The season is still young, and most schools seem to make offers in rounds after they get some feedback from the first group of acceptances.

My S just got a rejection from Harvard by post, so that ship has sailed.

Hi everybody. I'm not sure if anyone has applied to UNC, but they sent out their first round of acceptances this week (I got one!). I heard that the volume of applications was significantly higher than in previous years.

Have any schools mentioned that they're cutting back on admissions this year? I know last year a few schools mentioned to applicants that it was their most competitive admissions cycle in a long time (and might've taken a few extra because of it). Also, they might not have as much funding available this year. I'm pretty sure Berkeley used to have some sizable classes, but they said the past few years they've only averaged around 26 enrolled students, and are looking to enroll less than 20 this time around.

I haven't heard anything definite about that, but instinctively I would guess that schools are being conservative with their acceptances to ensure that they will have enough funding this year. I was awarded normal TA funding based on current funding levels, hopefully that won't change...

Math and sciences at my (large state) school have been hit VERY hard this year. Funded slots are definitely down.

So far, I heard from my top 3 choices of schools. All of them mentioned that they're taking less students this year, and they urged me to make a decision as soon as I can so that those waitlisted have more time to decide. It seems like this year is very tough. Lots of excellent and deserving students in my school haven't heard from any schools yet. But as people before me said, all it takes is one acceptance!

I appreciate everyone's kind words. I have some glimmer of hope for Northwestern as they seem to have given out 1st round offers and rejections, and I did not get a rejection. I think I MIGHT be a 2nd round admit, which is perfect by me as NW is really high on my list. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that some admits start coming my way this week.

SBUMathgrad, I am in the same track as you are... I am also rejected by UIUC in a reply to my email. Now my only hope is in the mid and lower ranked schools who havent made any decision yet.

Some news on UPENN: It appears someone else checked via the website and they got accepted. I called UPENN and they said all decisions will be sent out soon, as in the next week or so.

Thanks for the info SBUMathgrad. Their website doesn't say anything for me yet-- I hope that's not a bad sign.
