Math PhD admissions/rejections thread

Were your applications actually incomplete, or does the website just say they're incomplete? The status page for one school I've been accepted to already still says they don't have my transcript.

One of the two I somehow had paid but failed to submit, the other didn't recognize having my transcript.

Wow wow wow! I got into UT-Austin with a fellowship from the Geometry research group! I cannot believe this! None of this seems real!!!!

Nice! Well done.

Congratulations! Is this part of the NSF's RTG (research training group) program? I saw where Berkeley had something similar I could have theoretically benefited from, but the grant ended this year =[.

congrats sbumathgrad! that's pretty impressive

Yeap, I got a fellowship in the RTG Geometry group, exactly where I want to be.

You just gotta hang in there. I got an email on my phone on a Sunday. I wasn't expecting it at all.

Thanks to all my fellow applicants for the encouraging words and all the amazingly kind people that posts on these forums. Cookiemom rules in particular!

I'm going to let myself enjoy this for a day or two and then back to work.

Best of luck to all you guys, you just have to hang on and try to stay upbeat. I really really hope you guys get into schools you are happy with. I was a complete wreck this past month over grad admissions and I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I really hope you guys can see your hard work pay off. I will be hoping for you guys.

We all hear you! :) Congrats, and knowing some guys who're going through this right now, I can only imagine how it is. Two years to go for me. I pray starting now itself.

Bravo, SBUMathgrad!

Congratulations, SBUMathGrad!!

I've been silently following this thread but I was also in the admissions thread last year at TestMagic.

Hope you have a good time at UT. ^^

Thanks everyone!

Mathboy I'll like to offer some advice since you still have some time left (a lot time left actually). Just make sure that you work hard enough so that when you do apply 2 years from now and you are nervously waiting for admissions, you never say, I wish I did _______ better or I wish I worked harder on ______. Leave no regrets and then whatever happens, happens. I was nervous because I did not crush the GRE Math subject exam. But my recommenders must have stepped up for me big time. Two of my recommenders I worked with for over a year. Develop a good relationship with 2 or 3 professors and maintain those relationships, these are the people that will stand up for you come admissions time.

And of course, unlike myself, don't take the GRE Math exam lightly heh. I wouldn't worry too much, just do your best and try to see what branches of math you like. I think the main reason I got into Austin's Geometry group is because I heavily pursued geometry the last 3 semesters at the expense of algebra, analysis, etc.

Yeah, I am heading down a more algebro-geometric direction at this point, and hopefully my specializing a little early is seen as a strength!!

Unfortunately, I know very early on that the GRE is just not my kind of thing -- I guess I really should study over the summer, because I've truly forgotten surprisingly a lot. Anything algebraic, I'll definitely do, and basic analysis should be OK, but the calculus and probability and stuff seems a little scary for sure.

Nice of you to advise me -- I'll certainly be looking for good advice for the next 2 years.

Congrats again!!

"And of course, unlike myself, don't take the GRE Math exam lightly"

Agreed! I didn't have a chance to study for it at all--I seriously looked over the sample test the night before. Let's just say I wasn't happy with my score, though it could've been worse. I've heard of people studying hours a week for it for months in advance, that would have definitely helped me.

Also...
Congrats, SBU!

I got into Virginia Tech today. This relieves plenty of stress. Obviously I will seriously consider this offer though I'm still waiting on plenty of other schools. SBU, you are a little hard on yourself, you're the one who conviced me it was ok I hadn't crushed the subject test. Congrats again on UT Austin!

congrats orangelights!!

OMG! Congrats to both of you! UT-Austin? Looks like you hit the jackpot SBU. Not only is it a great program, but no more cold snowy winters! I can't believe you and orangelights both heard the same day. It sounds like orangelights is hoping for some better offers, but I know what a relief that first acceptance must be.

I've lost track. Is there anyone else who's still waiting for that first acceptance?

cookiemom! just shut up and back off! dont try to be oversmart. you talk way too much!!!

Congrats to the both of you! Go outside and hug a stranger! I guess we just got freaked out by how early the top flight schools sent out their offers.

I'm still waiting for an offer. I'm basically waiting to hear whether the ~50% chance of me getting into UCLA turns my way. Based on SBU's comments, I should hear one way or another this week (I'm on high alert with the checking of Grad Cafe and Gmail).

I'm also curious about what is going on with some of the other top 10 schools like Caltech. A friend of mine got an offer from them in the first week of Feb. last year. And Yale? Columbia? I guess not every ad com meets in January.

Oh yes... I'm really exciteed!!!! :) :) I just want my advisor to be the first one at my school to know so I've been trying hard not to walk around with a huge grin on my face, I guess that transfered to a rather terse first post. Cookiemom, thank you so so much for all your support. Yeah i'm waiting to see what other offers I get just out of curiosity now, I haven't really ranked my schools because I didn't want to be disappointed when my "top" choices didn't come through and its actually rather hard to rank 13 schools (think of how many posets there are on 13 elements). So I wouldn't emphasize the word "better" so much as "other". GGOOOOOOOOAAAALLLLL !!!

Congrats orangelights! I'm really glad this is working out for most of us thus far.
