I don't understand this problem AT ALL.

This problem too please: http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/4802/84979793.jpg

The second one is E. The reason being if a^2+b^2=c^2 then you have a right triange. If a^2+b^2<c^2 you=“” have=“” an=“” obtuse=“” triangle.=“” and=“” a^2+b^2=“”>c^2 you have an acute triangle.</c^2>

I think there’s an error on the first question. I can’t seem to find anything that is said to be shaded.

Yes the second one is E. I thought of it like this: If in a 3 4 5 triangle, the angle across from the hypotenuse is 90degrees then if the length of the hypotenuse is longer than the angle would increase.

Linger’s explanation, though simple, makes a lot of sense.

@owen: Can you explain the logic in the fact that a^2+b^2<c^2 yields=“” an=“” obtuse=“” triangle=“” and=“” a^2+b^2=“”>c^2 yields an acute triangle? I never really learned that concept.</c^2>

The sides have to open up more/less to accommodate for the third side. With it opening/closing more the angle increases/decreases. You can also think of it like this: The Pythagorean theorem is like a super special case, it only deals with 1 type of angle. For all the other angles c^2 would have to be greater than or less than, so the angle in question would be greater than or less than 90 degrees.

Thanks so much for the help

Not a problem.

BTW, anyone figure out the first question?

Theres nothing shaded in the picture so I cant do it.

Yea, that’s what I was confused about. I also need help with this one, though: http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/7812/30469975.jpg

Im pretty sure the slope is 3/4. Since the area is 9 you can find out the height is 3.[9=.5(6)(x)] The slope is rise over run. Thus giving you 3/4. Sorry for the horrible explanation. haha

B is 6 units from the origin, therefore the base of the triangle is 6.

The area of a triangle is base x height x 1/2.

This triangle’s area is 9.

6h/2 = 9
h = 3

So, point A is 3 units above point C. Point C is a 4,0, you know this because it’s 4 units in length. Therefore, point A is 4,3.

Find the slope of the line that goes from 0,0 to 4,3.

That’s 3/4. Remember, slope is rise/run.

Oh thanks Bassir. I took the hard way around with the 30-60-90 triangle theorem… don’t know why I over complicate things.

I like these questions, you should post more!
