8) A bucket holds 4 quarts of popcorn. If 1/3 cup of corn kernels makes 2 quarts of popcorn, how many buckets can be filled with the popcorn made from 4 cups of kernels?

Answer: (c) 6

9) On a number line, if point P has coordinate -2 and point Q has the coordinate 10, what is the coordinate of the point that is located 1/4 of the way from P to Q?

Answer: (d) 1

16) In how many different ways can 5 people arrange themselves in the 5 seats of a car for a trip if only 2 of the people can drive?

Answer: (d) 48

Anybody can help me explain these or what method/formulas I can approach with these problems?

8 is easy. If 1/3 a cup makes 2 quarts, then 1 cup makes 6 quarts. So four cups equals 4 times six which equals 24 quarts. If one bucket holds 4 quarts then you do 24/4 and get 6.

9) The distance from -2 to 10 is 12. So one third of twelve is 3. Add 3 to negative two and you get 1. (Remember you are going from P to Q)

For number 16: okay, so there’re two people who can drive. Say if the first of those two is driving, then you have one choice for the driver’s seat, four choices for second seat, three for third, two for the fourth, then one for the last seat. In other words:

14321=24

Now calculate the number of seating arrangement when the other one of two possible drivers is driving. You also get 24 possible arrangements in this case.

24+24=48

I think that’s how you do it…

Okay, I get 9 and 16, but 8 I still don’t understand.

Since the problem states that 1/3 cup makes 2 quarts, one cup equals 6 quarts. Four cups, then, would mean 24 quarts. Set up a proportion:

4quarts/1bucket = 24quarts/xbucket,

then solve, like what kobudnik said :).

Ooh I get it, thanks.
