Hi,
I am a high school senior and i want to have a degree in biological engineering. My sat2 math was only 720 and my act math score was 31. I think this is probably because i am not so great at geometry. I just took calculus bc and got As in the class. On the other hand, i got a 35 on the science section of the act and a 790 on the biology sat 2.
So i have two questions.
1.could i survive an engineering major at a competitive school?
2. Should I apply for a biology major first and switch into engineering?
Those math scores seem fine. It is easier to switch from engineering to biology, than vice versa.
My son had a 640 SAT math (taken once) and a 31 ACT math (taken once). He just completed his freshman year at Georgia Tech as a ChemE major. He got Bs in both Calculus 2 and Calculus 3 at GT. I think you will be just fine as an engineering major.
My son had a 560 SAT math score and is a junior in engineering with a 3.65 at a state flagship. He received B’s in Calc 1 and 2, an A in Calc 3 and A’s in physics I and II. My son has a very strong work ethic and study habits, though, and likes what he’s doing. Your SAT score is only part of the puzzle. Yours is good!
A 31 ACT will get you into a very good engineering program. Go for the engineering major if that is what you really want. You will get into the schools that you are academically matched for and those are the ones where you will be able to thrive. Applying to biology as a tactic to switchinto engineering is not a good move. You might find that that engineering school will not admit you as an internal transfer because they don’t think you can succeed in their program. Best to find the right engineering program from the start.
