My daughter will be at BUTI for 8 weeks this summer. I just received a letter from the magnet program she’ll be attending next year suggesting that she attend a two-day enrichment course for “those students specifically entering the advanced pathway of IB-Pre-Calculus.” Of course, the dates conflict with when she’ll be gone. I’m wondering if I might be able to connect her with a math-y older student who would be able to help her with the materials. (Assuming I’ll be able to get the course materials from the coordinator.) I don’t expect her to have a lot of trouble, but I was thinking that some kind of tutor/mentor would be great because A. I’m not much help if she gets stuck, and B. long-distance nagging isn’t likely to be pleasant or effective.
Specifics … She’s currently taking non-magnet Algebra 2 (magnet Algebra 2 is not offered to 8th graders… don’t get me started about the logic of busing 4 very bright 8th graders to high school to sit in a classroom full of 10th and 11th graders with average math aptitude). The letter says “Freshmen entering IB Pre-Calculus frequently find the transition difficult because their exposure to certain Math topics – Trigonometry, Statistics, and Functions – is limited.” The instructional time involved is just a few hours, so I don’t imagine they’re expecting the kids to understand Trig in great depth.
Any ideas for finding a suitable tutor? Feel free to PM for my email address if you know someone who might be interested in tutoring her.
