Mathematics and Economics or Mathematics and Sociology

Hi. I intend to pursue a degree in Applied Mathematics and Statistics(not a double major but a single major option under mathematics) along with another major in either Economics or in Sociology. I know a Economics degree will be more valuable but I like Sociology better. So what should I do? And how much time would each double degree option take to complete.(Aiming for LAC like Macalester College)

Applied Mathematics and Statistics is great for practicality, so it doesn’t seem unreasonable to add courses from the sociology you enjoy. Those courses MIGHT turn out to be useful to your work, moreover. (I don’t see the need to fixate on double majors unless you have a hard-to-quench love of college work. Employers don’t care about them.)

Rather than trying to check all of the boxes for a second major, just take your out-of-major electives in whatever you are interested in (and which may relate to your post-graduation goals). This could be a combination of economics, sociology, and/or other courses.
