max transfer units for UCLA?

I'm a freshman biochem major at a CCC. I want to transfer to UCLA. All pre-reqs in my major add up to 60 semester units. UCLA has a max # of transferrable semester units as 70. By the time I'm ready to transfer, I would have completed 80 semester units. The extra units besides the pre-reqs are from IGETC requirements.

Does this make me not eligible to transfer?

Students who have only CC units are exempt from any unit ceilings. You could take ten thousand units and still get subject credit, however between 70-80 will count toward the completion of your degree depending on the school.

You will be fine to transfer.

You don’t have to worry about having too many credits from CC, they cap the number of credits at 70. That means if you have more, it’ll just say that you’ve got 70 credits (or whatever that is in quarters) after you transfer. That won’t affect subject credit or your GPA or anything like that, all classes will still count for those.

If you’re coming from a 4 year school or you have upper div coursework, there’s a unit ceiling to worry about (I think 90 semester credits?) but you don’t need to worry about that if you’re coming from CC.

To expand on that a bit, even though they will only allow 70 units towards UCLA’s unit requirement for graduation, all the units you take at your CCC will receive credit for equivalent classes at UCLA.

You ought to get to know the xfer counselors at your school who can help you with questions like these. And if your school participates in TAP then that is supposed to help you in terms of UCLA admissions.
