May I be qualified as a Walter Williams scholar, but be in a J-Scholar FIG??

I am quite excited for being a Walter Williams scholar, and I will be graduating high school in two years (thats not for sure, obviously, but its my goal.) The research ive done has shown that not that many kids are happy with the Mark Twain hall... where the WW Figs kids are put. I know theres no way they can fit all the WW kids into the 2 figs, so could I BE a ww scholar but be in a Journalism Scholar Fig? Because, those figs seem to have better dorms.

Help??

My D. lived at MT dorm on 7-th floor ( WW floor) last year; it helped her and others to became close friends mostly not because of some classes together, but because of a lot of floor activity like watching movies, cooking pies, playing games. etc. This year a lot of them moved out to frat/sorority houses, apartments/houses, some stayed at MT, but they are still good friends who get together pretty often. All my D’s roommates at her apartment are WW scholars as well as their neighbors. In case if you live at other dorm, you will have only 2-3 events at J-school organized for WW scholars, that’s it. You will miss the main point to be on the program: to make friends among people with similar interests and abilities.

that makes a lot of sense and im glad to hear it! did she have TOO much complaints about mt hall or was it fairly liveable? i hear theyre small and somewhat dingy. but i love the idea of the friendships of the figs!

She didn’t have any major complains; mostly about dining halls  She would stay there for her sophomore year without any hesitation, but her friends talked her into moving to an apartment to have a real life and a real food  Even though seems she likes more her new place (because of her own room and bathroom], but there are some disadvantages.
You need to take a shuttle to get to the campus on week days or a car ( she doesn’t have it there because OOS) on weekends.
They also didn’t have Internet for almost 3 weeks, some kitchen appliances were broken until parents called the office, so you can call it a real life :-)
And their “real food” is mostly meals for microwave or cereal…
Definitely dorm life was more convenient and careless; and if she decided to stay at a dorm, she would be at MT again: all J-classes are in a very short distance, MT dining hall is one of the best ( even though all of them are bad - in her words), their own pool, very close to downtown and everything else. So it’s ok, don’t worry and good luck to you!

You can be in WW, but don’t necessarily live in a WW FIG. Check out the Honors Journalism FIG. You get to live in Schurz which is a much newer dorm and closer to more of your classes. Mark Twain definitely has the small, dingy rep.
Since you are on this website, you are probably really concerned about academics, so definitely go for an Honors or WW FIG. Both students in the FIG know how to have fun, but also won’t bug you if you need to study, and will help you out in making study groups.
One of the best friends I made here is in WW and is in a Honors Journalism FIG. She loves it, because not only does she meet WW kids at their functions and classes, but is really close with other Honors kids.
Whichever dorm you choose though, you will have a great time. You’ll find really close friendships with your floor mates no matter where you live.
