@urbanjn Ahh sorry to hear that. From your posts you seem like a very eloquent writer, so you are likely right about the quantity thing. Since most readers aren’t English teachers, they may have just been very rubric-oriented, at your expense.
Also, I looked up the SAT restore policy:
https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/scores/verifying-scores
Apparently they DO NOT reread/rescore the essay; they only rescan, or look for discrepancies in score reporting (on the graders’ behalf). So if your graders were just really harsh, SAT won’t change anything. I would compare your essay to the SAT’s sample prompts/essays (can be found online if you Google SAT essay scoring; different prompts but same general format) and see if your formatting/organization/content were just unique. If you think that the graders’ might have given you a good score but sometiong got messed up technologically, rescore provided money isn’t an issue. OTOH, if it looks like maybe the graders’ just didn’t think you followed rubric well, there’s not much you can do.
@OjBlessing I wouldn’t worry about it too much; they might just have a delay, but if it’s not online within the next week I’d call them. Right now, though, there’s no need to be worried. (Note that they say: "MOST May SAT scores are available)
@OjBlessing @PeregrineFlute
My daughter’s scores did not post this morning so I called College Board. I was told that if the scores hadn’t posted by now, there must have been a delay in getting her test sheet to the College Board, or there was an inconsistency in identifying information on her test sheet. Either of those scenarios seems rather unlikely, but I have emailed the test proctor just to give her the heads up. CB said they will contact me in 5-7 business days for follow-up. We’re not thrilled about the situation, especially since we had to wait nearly six weeks to get to this point.
@ShrimpBurrito That’s tough to hear. The wait is already fraught with apprehension, so the inefficiencies just compound the problem.
Maybe there was a mail mishap, or just a problem with scanning?
Hopefully they will get everything done ASAP.
Thanks @PeregrineFlute My email has already been forwarded to our test site administrator. Maybe s/he can be a more efficient problem solver than College Board.
My essay was also way way way too low. I got 750 on reading/writing but 4/2/4 on essay. I’ll admit that I didn’t feel good after that essay but not that bad.
Not trying to stir the pot, but I have to disagree when folks say, “I’m a better writer than this… my average score is way too low.” Especially with the new SAT essay, there is a VERY specific style they are looking for. It’s the rhetorical analysis essay taught in AP Lang, and students are expected to know how to write it. If your scores are low, you likely weren’t familiar with the essay style or you just got a really bad vibe with the prompt. The same is true on the ACT essay. From my experience and those I’ve talked to, if you don’t follow a specific style for the essay, which involves counterarguments and utilizing every bit of material they give you, you’re getting a lower score. I know a student who consistently scored even with or higher than me in Lang, but they got a ridiculously low score on the ACT essay. After talking to them, I realized it was because of the incorrect style they used. Again… not trying to discourage those of you who are distraught after low essay scores, just trying to explain why they probably are not simply evidence of the College Board’s lunacy.
I got a 8-7-8 on the essay, anyone who made note of the changes should’ve achieved a similar score. This happened while I was least prepared for the essay.
Gonna retake in Oct. The NEW SAT is ‘weirdly’ scored.
I didn’t know that you had to take AP Lang to score well in the SAT essay haha. I’m an international student (I did A levels) so the format of the new essay was quite tricky for me. I scored a 6-5-7 but I did well for the SATs (1580) so I don’t think I’ll bother retaking.
I remember some colleges saying that they don’t require the SAT essay as it’s not what they are looking for in their students (creativity etc.) so I think there’s no need to retake unless it’s a dismal score because frankly that style of writing is quite hard to emulate.
@wstarry You don’t have to necessarily, its just that the course helps a ton with the SAT essay. You could theoretically do well on the essay without having taken AP.
@wstarry Hey I’m an international student as well (taking Alevels) and I gave the SAT without essay. Could you tell me what the essay was like for you and how you prepped, considering we follow similar curriculum?
@bibliosmia My daughter got 21 out of 24 on the essay. She did not find it difficult. If you have an A or A star in GCSE English you will be fine. Just analyse
the text, come up with arguments, support the arguments and make a conclusion.
@londondad thanks! I actually got a B, which was totally unexpected though. So I am not entirely confident about my expertise when it comes to essay writing.
