For the strings passage about the first sentence of passage 2, was it “History… future” or “Scope… outcome?”

Yeah, RustGust, I had sudden bursts at first, but then changed my answer to unexpected whim… also because they had the word “starts” which I’d associate more with the idea of a sudden burst… so I just thought that to be redundant.

Fit: n.

I put unexpected whims
sudden bursts is way too harsh
whims means that science can go in any direction, it can be accepted, declined, revised, anything.

2)fits and starts answer - sudden bursts/unexpected whims?

keep adding/put a question mark if you don’t agree

Again, I don’t believe qualification is correct. I’d argue for understatement because both authors mentioned one general thing and then tried to diminish its importance in favor of the position they were supporting.

As for the sudden bursts/unexpected whims question:

the phrase was “science moves in fits and starts”. what is fits referring to?

It is unlikely that the answer is unexpected whims because “unexpected whims and starts” sounds bad; the former encompasses the latter.

The answer is sudden bursts. You have to look at the word you’re trying to find a definition for. When has a “fit” EVER meant something whimsical?

“A qualification is a detail or explanation that you add to a statement to make it less strong or less general.”

I put sudden bursts, anyone else put that?

I put sudden bursts

^^^^
There’s a good explanation of why the answer is qualification somewhere around page 8-11 of this thread.
The main reason was that none of the other answers fit. I don’t see how understatement could work, but I don’t remember the passage very well anymore either.

^
Explain why you all put sudden bursts.
We’re all split between that and whims.

The answer to that qualification one IS qualification, because they’re making a claim then saying “BUT blah blah blah.” That’s literally what a qualification is.

can someone please explain why the answer is qualification and NOT understatement?

2)passage 1 says reason string theory is hard to prove is because math is too complex

I put that “science was too arbitrary” Explain?

“3)cost means personal toll”

I put moral fortitude for this, or something of the like.

“1)chimpanzees were cracking nuts”

Does anybody else remember the other answers for this?

Was one of the answers for the string theory passage “evidence of mathematical complexity” or something to that effect?

WHY ITS SUDDEN BURSTS: (reference: dictionary)
burst: “A burst of something is a sudden short period of it.”
fits and starts (as an expression): “frequently starting and stopping again; not continuously”

short periods=discontinuous

/discussion

I was thinking chimpanzees were using tools or something as part of the answer… right?

Was it chimps were cracking nuts with tools?

I thought it was medium difficulty except for the vocab which I found easy. Unfortunately I also did poorly and I expect a score around 1900-2000. Not really what I was shooting for but oh well I will take it again in June.
